STAR Systems International Deploys 1.2 Million Headlamp Transponders in the Dominican Republic

Light & Power Holdings Ltd. to acquire Emera Caribbean Limited's Interest in St. Lucia Electricity Services

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia and BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Oct. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Emera Inc. (TSX: EMA) announced today that its wholly-owned subsidiary Emera Caribbean Limited has agreed to sell its 19.1% indirect interest in St. Lucia Electricity Services Ltd (LUCELEC) to Light & Power Holdings Ltd. (LPH), also an Emera Inc. subsidiary, for US $25.8 million.

“This acquisition will allow for greater cooperation between two leading electric utilities in the Eastern Caribbean,” stated Peter Williams, Managing Director, LPH. “LPH having an equity stake in LUCELEC will allow for a sharing of skills and increased efficiencies that we believe will result in benefits to customers in both countries.”

LPH is an investment company and the owner of The Barbados Light & Power Company Limited, a licensed supplier of electricity energy in Barbados. Formed as a holding company in 1997, LPH was created to allow Shareholders to take full advantage of potential investment opportunities in and outside of Barbados, including equity investments in other utilities.  The acquisition of 19.1 % of LUCELEC is consistent with this mandate. LPH is 80% owned by Emera Inc.

LUCELEC is a vertically integrated electric utility serving more than 60,000 customers, with exclusive license to generate, transmit and distribute electricity on the island of St. Lucia to the year 2045. The utility has 76 MW of generation capacity, primarily oil fired, and 1000 Km of electricity transmission and distribution assets.

LUCELEC’s Managing Director, Trevor Louisy, welcomed news of the investment noting, “It marks the start of a new era in the utility sector in the region.  Clearly the region has the financial and technical capacity to make such investments, which was unheard of in the past, and is indicative of a maturing of the sector. The terms of the acquisition agreement between Emera Caribbean and LPH provide for a potential sales price increase or decrease of US $4 million within 30 months of the closing date of the transaction.  Any adjustment would be triggered by either an additional public offering by LUCELEC; or a change in its allowed return on equity as a result of a change in its regulatory framework.

This acquisition is subject to relevant government and regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2011.

LIME Celebrates Labor Day Weekend In New York’s Caribbean Diaspora

Early on Monday, Regional Head of Sponsorship for LIME, Sheldon Keens-Douglas, spent the morning with Mayor Mike Bloomberg and other city elected officials and business leaders at the annual kick-off breakfast of the West Indian American Day Carnival Association, reiterating the company’s commitment to the Diaspora and organizations like WIADCA.
 
”We wouldn’t miss it,” he explained. “After our participation last year we knew we would be back. The ‘E’ in LIME is refers to ourability to bring cultural activities home to our customers through exciting products like LIME TV, Video on Demand and LIME Mobile TV and the West Indian Carnival Festival is a great complement in that regard.”
 
 
 
LIME’s presence at the carnival brought the curtains down on a weekend long series of events that included sponsorship of the inaugural Reggae, Rhythm and Blues concert on Sunday, September 4th at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, NY, that featured performances from the likes of Movado, Machel Montano, John Holt, I-Octane, Kenneth “Baby Face” Edmonds” and Monica.
 
“For this summer, our double-top up promotion – which offered each customer who bought credit to get two times the amount paid for – was all about keeping in touch with friends and family back home. And the festival is about keeping in touch with that Caribbean legacy and heritage. There is a synergy here that LIME, with our own legacy of over 140 years, is proud to support,” said Keens-Douglas.
 
 
The company’s support also made the EVERYBODY’S Calypso & Soca Tent-Revue at the Tropical Paradise Ballroom that featured the world’s top calypso & soca superstars, such as The Mighty Sparrow, the Calypso King of the World, Shadow, Becket, Denyse Plummer, Rikki Jai and Edwin Yearwood, from August 29th – September 2nd, a reality; along with Brass Fest on Friday, September 2 at the grounds of the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, NY, which saw thousands of Caribbean music fans jump and wave with LIME to the music of the 2011 Carnival King Machel Montano & Kes The Band, Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy and WCR. LIME also reinforced their commitment to family with the support of the Kiddies Carnival at the Brooklyn Museum grounds Saturday – as thousands of children proudly parade in their carnival costumes.
 
 
The telecommunications giant also returned for the second consecutive year as the platinum sponsor of the Caribbean Netball Association’s (CANA) Summer Netball League and Caribbean Cup 2011, which featured teams representing Jamaica, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Sri Lanka and Barbados. The round-robin Caribbean Cup tournament this past Sunday, September 11th, 2011, brought the curtain down on the summer long netball carnival which kicked off on June 4th at the Lincoln Terrace Park in Brooklyn, New York. LIME’s sponsorship included uniforms, prizes, and telecommunications services for the tournament at the various games that took place over the summer.
