CaribPR Wire, NEW YORK, NY, Feb. 3, 2012: Find out this June when the second Invest Caribbean Now power forum returns to New York City.

This year’s forum promises to be even more significant in advancing U.S. and worldwide interest in emerging opportunities throughout the Caribbean,” said Felicia Persaud, the convener of Invest Caribbean 2012 for the Caribbean Tourism Organization, in announcing this year’s forum.

Coming on the heels of an ultra successful event in 2011 that featured over 300 money managers, investors, hoteliers, ministers of governments and real estate developers, the Invest Caribbean Now power forum will return to New York City this June as part of Caribbean Week in New York.

The Caribbean Tourism Organization will again partner with digital media company, Hard Beat Communications, to present the second investment forum on June 6, 2012 in New York City.

Solamon Energy Corp is a renewable energy developer providing Caribbean and Central American clients with cost effective and reliable RE power generation solutions. Jay and his team work recently announced plans to build the Caribbean’s largest solar power plant in Jamaica. It is expected that the program, estimated to cost 450 million dollars, will enhance and improve Jamaica’s energy infrastructure, as well as help attract additional investment in the ICT and green tech sectors.

Blue Equity is a private equity firm with a diverse and innovative portfolio of business enterprises, with concentrations in oil and gas, media, healthcare, defense, financial services, real estate, manufacturing, art commerce, and sports and entertainment. Jonathan and Blue currently are already investing in the Caribbean through Cool Petroleum Limited, the licensed user of Shell brands in Jamaica and Island Ice & Beverage Company Limited, which manufactures and distributes packaged ice in the Caribbean. “The Caribbean Tourism Organization is proud to team up with Hard Beat to present this event for the second year, since in these tough economic times, investment in the Caribbean and Latin America is critical and the CTO believes strongly in continuing to boost the tourism sector of this vibrant region by presenting investment opportunities for its members,” said Sylma Brown Bramble, director of CTO-USA Inc.

Monty Alexander (Photo Credit: Crush Boone)

CaribPR, New York, NY, Nov. 14, 2011:  Music fans in New York and D.C. will be able to close off 2011 on a high note as master pianist, Monty Alexander, continues to celebrate his 50th year anniversary of performing by offering up a mélange of music from Jamaica to Sinatra and Cole this December.

Alexander, whose recent album, “Uplift” has held the number one spot on the Jazz World Radio charts for 14 straight weeks, will pay tribute to his musical heroes – Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole – as part of the Singers over Manhattan Series at the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center, 33 W 60th Street in New York City, from Friday, December 9th to Saturday, December 10th, at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., respectively.

It was Frank Sinatra and pal, Jilly Rizzo, who first brought Alexander to New York while in his late teens where he went on to play at their New York night club, Jilly’s. There Alexander actually accompanied Mr. Sinatra when he sang.

But prior to that adventure, as a boy in his homeland, Alexander grew up listening to Nat King Cole in his own home and after seeing him in 1956 in his hometown of Kingston, Jamaica, at age 12, he knew he wanted to play jazz for the rest of his life. Thirty-four years later, Natalie Cole, the daughter of Nat King Cole, invited Alexander to assist her on her album, “Unforgettable,” a tribute to her father.

Alexander will also be joined in the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center from Dec. 9-10th, by guitarist Russell Malone and saxophonist Houston Person. Vocalist James De Frances, a 21-year-old phenom, and veteran, Allan Harris, will perform the respective roles of Sinatra and Cole.

Tickets for the December 9th -10th shows are $55 and $65 and can be obtained by logging on to https://tickets.jalc.org/ticketing/show_events_list.asp.

The Commander of Distinction will move on the legendary Blues Alley at 1073 Wisconsin Ave NW Washington D.C., to wrap up the year and ring in another, from December 28th to the 31st.  From Jamaica With Love will be the highlight of another trademark lively performance by Alexander as he showcases some of the quartet version from his latest “Harlem Kingston” experience, taking the audience on a musical journey between his Jamaican roots and his American jazz roots.

“I’m very glad to be able to end 2011 and part of my 50th year of celebration in music this way, where I can present my personal reflections at these two treasures of American culture at its best,” said Alexander.

Buy tickets for the Blues Alley shows at http://www.bluesalley.com/events.cfm

Over his stellar five decade long career, Alexander, who has earned a place among the top five jazz artistes in Hal Leonard’s book, “The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of all Time,” has performed with international stars including Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Bill Cosby, Bobby McFerrin, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare.

He maintains an active touring schedule, thrilling audiences around the world with his own distinct brand of jazz that leaves audiences moving to the beat wherever he plays.

LIME Celebrates Labor Day Weekend In New York’s Caribbean Diaspora

CaribPR Wire, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Thurs. Sept. 15, 2011: For the second consecutive year, LIME was among top sponsors of the 44th Annual West Indian Carnival Festival that drew over three million to Eastern Parkway on Labor Day in Brooklyn, U.S.A. on September 5th.  A huge LIME-sponsored float from KARMA made its way down the Parkway as over two dozen LIME girls showed off the company’s colors with rags and shiny costumes and as executives stressed the company’s commitment to the Diaspora is not just short-term but here to stay.

While the LIME float urged fans to send minutes home to family and friends, the message at the company’s booth on the parade route created a buzz, as customers from the Diaspora and over 14 Caribbean islands lined up to take advantage of the 100 bonus credit offered over the weekend to any LIME mobile phone. Among those welcoming the LIME promotion was Jamaican national Caroline Greaves and her daughter, who have been Brooklyn residents for the past thirty years.

“I am thinking of trying their new TopUp plan which gives double credit, you cannot beat this kind of deal,” Greaves said, as the LIME float with a number of costumed clad revelers passed by. “Many of my friends are switching to LIME because they like their affordable rates and products.”

Early on Monday, Regional Head of Sponsorship for LIME, Sheldon Keens-Douglas, spent the morning with Mayor Mike Bloomberg and other city elected officials and business leaders at the annual kick-off breakfast of the West Indian American Day Carnival Association, reiterating the company’s commitment to the Diaspora and organizations like WIADCA.

”We wouldn’t miss it,” he explained. “After our participation last year we knew we would be back. The ‘E’ in LIME is refers to ourability to bring cultural activities home to our customers through exciting products like LIME TV, Video on Demand and LIME Mobile TV and the West Indian Carnival Festival is a great complement in that regard.”

LIME’s presence at the carnival brought the curtains down on a weekend long series of events that included sponsorship of the inaugural Reggae, Rhythm and Blues concert on Sunday, September 4th at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, NY, that featured performances from the likes of Movado, Machel Montano, John Holt, I-Octane, Kenneth “Baby Face” Edmonds” and Monica.

“For this summer, our double-top up promotion – which offered each customer who bought credit to get two times the amount paid for – was all about keeping in touch with friends and family back home. And the festival is about keeping in touch with that Caribbean legacy and heritage. There is a synergy here that LIME, with our own legacy of over 140 years, is proud to support,” said Keens-Douglas.

The company’s support also made the EVERYBODY’S Calypso & Soca Tent-Revue at the Tropical Paradise Ballroom that featured the world’s top calypso & soca superstars, such as The Mighty Sparrow, the Calypso King of the World, Shadow, Becket, Denyse Plummer, Rikki Jai and Edwin Yearwood, from August 29th – September 2nd, a reality; along with Brass Fest on Friday, September 2 at the grounds of the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, NY, which saw thousands of Caribbean music fans jump and wave with LIME to the music of the 2011 Carnival King Machel Montano & Kes The Band, Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy and WCR. LIME also reinforced their commitment to family with the support of the Kiddies Carnival at the Brooklyn Museum grounds Saturday – as thousands of children proudly parade in their carnival costumes.

The telecommunications giant also returned for the second consecutive year as the platinum sponsor of the Caribbean Netball Association’s (CANA) Summer Netball League and Caribbean Cup 2011, which featured teams representing Jamaica, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Sri Lanka and Barbados. The round-robin Caribbean Cup tournament this past Sunday, September 11th, 2011, brought the curtain down on the summer long netball carnival which kicked off on June 4th at the Lincoln Terrace Park in Brooklyn, New York. LIME’s sponsorship included uniforms, prizes, and telecommunications services for the tournament at the various games that took place over the summer.

The True Beauty of Local Artisans – DESIGN CARIBBEAN 2011

designcaribbean

CaribPR Wire, Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, August 24, 2011: ‘Proud, bold and creative’ are just three words that can be used to describe Caribbean artisans and the products they are able to produce.  Drawing on a range of influences Caribbean culture is a convergence of African, European and Amerindian heritage. This collective union has produced a unique environment from which artisans are able to create something rare and beautiful which appeals not only to their captive audience of the Caribbean public and buyers but also international buyers looking for something different and exceptional.

Caribbean Export has adjusted its 14 year old Caribbean Gift and Craft show to match the ever-changing need to supply products that encapsulate all of what the Caribbean is about. One of the most notable comments from the historical Gift Shows is that there have been too many imports.  Whether from China or India, these imports may be inexpensive but the product is mass produced, uninteresting and not unique to the Caribbean. Tourists are simply too well travelled to be interested in making that purchase no matter how inexpensive it is and most are looking for a breath of fresh that they can take back home and show-off to family and friends.

Maroon Baskets

Caribbean Export has taken this feedback into consideration and has spent the past year vetting quality Caribbean artisans making it easy for Hotel Gift Shops and general home stores in the region to access this quality type of product in one convenient location – the re branded Design Caribbean show.

All of the artisans at the event have been carefully selected by a panel of judges to showcase their work at this leading Caribbean trade show.  Everyone attending will find high quality, high end products that are not available in every street stall, shop window or market.

Unlike their rivals from mass producing countries such as China these products are special, dynamic and rare and reflect everything the region represents – beauty and talent. All of the goods on offer will be luxury, high caliber, design conscious pieces that are lovingly crafted to appeal to the public as well as boutique buyers and anyone looking for a stellar product that won’t be left on the shelf.

The new show DESIGN CARIBBEAN, takes place September 1-4, 2011, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic . September 1st, is for Trade only. It will take place at the Occidental El Embajador one of the region’s most exclusive venues in the Dominican Republic’s capital Santo Domingo.

Design Caribbean is more than a trade show as buyers from across the world and members of the public will be treated to a feast of talent that cannot be readily found under one roof. Sponsored by the European Union, FedEx, Abordage and American Airlines among others, those attending the event will also be treated to a spa and wellness section, a film screening, a fashion event and a rum experience as well as musical performances from the region’s top international performers such as Alison Hinds who is labeled regionally the Soca Queen and has had worldwide success with her hit ‘Roll’.

Come to Santo Domingo from September 1st – 4th 2011 not just to ‘Celebrate the beautiful’ but to ‘Celebrate the Caribbean’.

The Jamaican-born Commander of Distinction, dubbed “a masterly pianist who delights audiences everywhere” by the London Evening Standard, recently wrapped up a performance at the first annual Reggae Jazz Fusion show on May 22, 2011 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida and received the honor of having May 22, 2011 proclaimed Monty Alexander Day in Broward County, Florida by Commissioner Dale Holness.

The ‘Uplift’ album from Alexander and Jazz Legacy Productions includes such pieces as “Come Fly With Me,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Body and Soul” and “Home.” It will be preceded by “MOTÉMA: Monty Alexander: Harlem-Kingston Express,” coming soon to a store near you.

Over his stellar career, the Kingston-born musician, who has earned a place among the top five jazz artistes in Hal Leonard’s book, “The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of all Time,” has performed with international stars including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Bill Cosby, Bobby McFerrin, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare.

In fact, it was Sinatra and his best friend Jilly Rizzo who hired Alexander after he moved to the United States in 1961 at the age of seventeen.  And it was at Jilly’s famed New York City nightclub that this Jamaican teen caught the ears of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Milt “Bags” Jackson.

It was Bags who introduced him to the great bassist Ray Brown, and the rest as they say, is history, including Alexander’s 1976 Montreux (Switzerland) Jazz Festival performance with drummer Jeff Hamilton and bassist John Clayton, which has become one of the most celebrated live recordings in contemporary jazz.

His extraordinary contribution to jazz globally led to the Jamaican government awarding Alexander the title of Commander in the Order of Distinction for outstanding services to Jamaica as a worldwide music ambassador in 2000.
