Jazz Great Marks Half-Century In Music

      monty

CaribPR Wire, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. Dec. 21, 2010: It’s been half a century already since Jamaican-born jazz great, Monty Alexander, has been performing professionally.

The piano virtuoso will kick-off his 50th anniversary celebration next month with a special five-night performance at the Birdland Jazz Club – 315 West 44th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues in New York City.

Alexander, declared one of the greatest jazz piano players of all time in Hal Leonard’s 2005 book, and with a whopping 60 albums under his belt, is set to thrill fans from Tuesday April 5th to Saturday April 9th with two nightly shows at 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m., respectively.

“This engagement is the first in a series of concerts in celebration of my 50th year in music,” commented Alexander. “It gives me a special opportunity to look back musically to 1961 and my first jobs in Kingston, Jamaica, with my first group, Monty and the Cyclones and the recordings I did for Coxsone Dodd and Duke Reed. I also look forward to reflecting musically on adventures I had through the years with, among others, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Quincy Jones, Ray Brown and other legends of Jazz.”

The performance comes on the heels of the release of Uplift, a new album from Alexander and Jazz Legacy Productions that includes such pieces as “Come Fly With Me,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Body and Soul” and “Home.”

Over his stellar career, the Kingston-born musician has performed with international stars including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Bill Cosby, Bobby McFerrin, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare.

Infact, it was Sinatra and his best friend Jilly Rizzo who hired Alexander after he moved to the United States in 1961 at the age of seventeen.  And it was at Jilly’s famed New York City nightclub that this Jamaican teen caught the ears of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Milt “Bags” Jackson.

It was Bags who introduced him to the great bassist Ray Brown, and the rest as they say, is history, including Alexander’s 1976 Montreux (Switzerland) Jazz Festival performance with drummer Jeff Hamilton and bassist John Clayton, which has become one of the most celebrated live recordings in contemporary jazz.

His extraordinary contribution to jazz globally led tothe Jamaican government awarding Alexander the title of Commander in the Order of Distinction for outstanding services to Jamaica as a worldwide music ambassador in 2000.

Tickets for the April 5-9th shows can be purchased by logging on http://www.birdlandjazz.com/calendar/ and clicking on the date of the performance you’d like to purchase tickets for the Alexander celebratory concerts.

Renowned Jamaican Jazz Great Monty Alexander Presents Reflections On Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra

                                                                                                                                                               monty

CaribPR Wire, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. Nov. 8, 2010: Renowned Jamaican-born jazz pianist, Monty Alexander, still remembers when he first saw the legendary Nat King Cole and  met Frank Sinatra. Cole’s musical impact on the younger Monty and his later musical experiences with Sinatra will come in to focus this month when Alexander reflects on both icons of America’s great songbook at a New York City show.

Alexander, Jamaica’s acclaimed Commander of Distinction, will present his “King Cole and Mr. S” reflections from November 23-25th at the legendary Birdland Jazz Club, 315 West 44th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues in Manhattan. Show times for the three night shows will be at 8:30 and 11 p.m., respectively.

Accompanying Alexander will be his phenomenal group of Robert Thomas, Jr. on hand drums; Lorin Cohen on bass; Winard Harper on drums and Yotam Silberstein on guitar. The shows will be made even more special this fall season with the addition of a brilliant vocalist James De Frances, who is set to belt out favorites from both Cole and Sinatra to the accompaniment of Alexander and his ensemble.
Of course Alexander will also pay tribute to his roots by including some of his upbeat reggae-themed pieces for patrons attending the shows.

Alexander, who has the distinction of being named one of the greatest piano players in jazz, still remembers seeing Cole for the first time at age 12 at a theater in his native Jamaica, and being overtaken by the spirit of the singer and his music.

It is that love, knowledge and dedication to the memory of Cole that would filter back to Cole’s daughter, Natalie, who invited him to assist her on the “Unforgettable” album.  The Sinatra connection was a lot more by chance. The largely self-taught pianist was playing in a Miami bar in his teens that was visited by Sinatra and his group of friends, including his right hand man, Jilly Rizzo. When Alexander ended his set he was approached by Rizzo and the legendary singer who invited him to play at the New York bistro, Jilly’s. Alexander moved to New York where he played on and off for several years, accompanying ‘Ole Blue Eyes’ on various occasions.

“The kid is a gas,” is how Sinatra, using the lingo at the time for “superb,” once described Alexander.

The Kingston-born musician has also performed with the likes of Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Bill Cosby, Bobby McFerrin, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare and on the “Concrete Jungle, The Music of Bob Marley collection,” over his five decade-long career.

He has recorded over 60 albums to date and is set to mark his 50th year in the music industry with a new album next year.  His 1976 Montreux (Switzerland) Jazz Festival performance with drummer Jeff Hamilton and bassist John Clayton has become one of the most celebrated live recordings in contemporary jazz. Alexander’s most recent albums on the Telarc label include trio sessions, such as “Impressions in Blue,” and the live concert recording “Goin’ Yard.” His release on Chesky is “Calypso Blues” is a tribute to his hero Nat Cole.

In August 2000, the Jamaican government awarded Alexander the title of Commander in the Order of Distinction for outstanding services to Jamaica as a worldwide music ambassador.

Tickets for Alexander’s shows on Tuesday-Thursday, November 23-25 at Birdland are $30 and $40, respectively and can be purchased by logging on to http://www.birdlandjazz.com/ or by calling (212) 581-3080.

HBO Premieres the New Drama Series Boardwalk Empire in the Caribbean

MIAMI, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ — HBO Latin America announced that the new, highly anticipated drama series, Boardwalk Empire, will premiere in the Caribbean on Sunday, October 3, 2010. Created by the Emmy®-winning writer of “The Sopranos”, Terence Winter, and produced and directed by the widely acclaimed Martin Scorsese, this roaring ’20s drama takes place at the dawn of Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol became illegal throughout the United States. The plot follows a corrupt politician and his network of liquor smugglers, as they rise to undisputed leadership of the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk.

“Once again, HBO offers the perfect combination of the best talent from film and television, as well as a storyline full of drama and action. Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese and producers like Mark Wahlberg, in collaboration with this outstanding cast, will make Boardwalk Empire one of the best series of all time and, without a doubt, a true favorite among our Caribbean subscribers,” said Gustavo Grossman, Vice President and General Manager of HBO Networks Latin America.

With the Great War over, it is a time of vast changes in America. On the beach in southern New Jersey sits Atlantic City, a spectacular resort known as “The World’s Playground” – a place where the rules do not apply. Its famous boardwalk, filled with luxurious hotels, nightclubs, amusement piers and entertainment rivaling that of Broadway, quickly emerges as the mecca for the illegal trafficking of alcoholic beverages. At the head of all backroom dealings and rum-running is the town’s treasurer, Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi). Corrupt, yet clever, Nucky effortlessly caries out a double life – one in which he reveals himself to be a respected politician, by day, and a feared gangster, by night.

Together with his brother Elias (Shea Whigham) – the town’s sheriff – and a crew of Ward Bosses and local thugs, Nucky heads smuggling operations, doing business with some of the most infamous names in mafia history: Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg), Big Jim Colosimo, (Frank Crudele), Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza) and Al Capone (Stephen Graham). As a result, Nucky positions himself as the primary contact for anyone wanting to obtain alcohol illegally.

The story takes a complicated turn when Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt), Nucky’s former protege and driver, returns from the war eager to get ahead and reclaim his rightful place in the political fixer’s organization. But when Jimmy feels things aren’t moving quickly enough, he takes matters into his own hands, forming a deadly alliance with some of Nucky’s associates, which promptly sets Federal Agent Nelson Van Alden (Michael Shannon) on his mentor’s tail.

Boardwalk Empire’s star cast features Michael Kenneth Williams as Chalky White, leader of the area’s African-American community; Gretchen Mol as the exotic dancer, Gillian, who shares a long and complicated history with Nucky; Dabney Coleman as Nucky’s mentor, Commodore Louis Kaestner; Paz de la Huerta as Nucky’s girlfriend, Lucy; Kelly Macdonald as Margaret Schroeder, a married woman that also becomes involved with Nucky; Paul Sparks as Mickey Doyle; Anthony Laciura as Eddie Kessler; and Aleksa Palladino as Angela, Jimmy Darmody’s Bohemian girlfriend and mother of their three-year-old son.

Inspired by Nelson Johnson’s book, BoardWalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City, Boardwalk Empire is directed by Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Jeremy Podeswa, Alan Taylor and Allen Coulter; executive-producers include Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg, with Gene Kelly as co-executive producer; produced by Rudd Simmons and Rick Yorn, with Howard Korder as supervising producer, and David Coatsworth as producer of the pilot.

Writers that collaborated with Terence Winter include Lawrence Konner, Howard Korder, Tim Van Patten, Paul Simms, Margaret Nagle, Steve Kornacki and Meg Jackson.

Lovers Rock Legend Beres Hammond Will Headline Peace Concert on St. Croix

ciga

CaribPR Wire, ST. CROIX, USVI, Sun, Aug. 1, 2010: Shawn Baptiste, CEO of CIGA Promotions, announced today that lovers rock legend, Beres Hammond will headline the “How Can We Ease the Pain Peace Concert” slated for October 23, 2010 at the Randall “Doc” James Racetrack on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Hammond, a staple on the international music scene for more than 30 years, will perform classics like “Putting Up Resistance,” “Tempted to Touch” and “How Can We Ease the Pain” as well as more recent hits like “Rockaway” and “I Feel Good.” Known as the “King of Lovers Rock”, this soulful crooner established himself as one of the most prolific international artists out of Jamaica. He has played an instrumental role in introducing smooth reggae music to mainstream audiences around the world.

“This is a very important event that is more than just a concert. Over the last few years, our community has been plagued with senseless acts of violence. I wanted to take this opportunity to bring people together in a safe environment to celebrate life, love and peace. Very few artists exemplify peace and love through their body of music like the one and only Beres Hammond,” stated Baptiste.

Baptiste continued, “CIGA Promotions has brought Beres Hammond  to St. Croix on two previous occasions and I am looking forward to another wonderful experience for our community.”

Additional details about this exciting event will be announced soon. For additional information or sponsorship opportunities contact CIGA Promotions at 340-513-2218 or cigapromotionsvi@gmail.com.
