Algonquin and Emera announce a Strategic Investment Agreement and the transfer of California Utility to Algonquin

OAKVILLE, Ontario, and HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, April 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — (TSX: AQN) Algonquin Power and Utilities Corp (Algonquin) and (TSX: EMA) Emera Inc. (Emera) announced today that they have entered into a strategic investment agreement (The Agreement) which establishes how Algonquin and Emera will work together to pursue specific strategic investments of mutual benefit. The Agreement builds on the strategic partnership effectively established between the two companies in April 2009.

The Agreement outlines “areas of pursuit” for each of Algonquin and Emera. For Algonquin, these include investment opportunities relating to unregulated renewable generation, small electric utilities and gas distribution utilities. For Emera, these include investment opportunities related to regulated renewable projects within its service territories and large electric utilities. In respect of opportunities encountered by either Algonquin or Emera that fit within the other’s business development “areas of pursuit”, they are committed to working together on such opportunities.

Consistent with the framework established by the Agreement, Emera has agreed to sell its 49.999% direct ownership in the California Pacific Electric Company (”CalPeco”) to Algonquin, subject to California regulatory approval. As consideration Emera will receive 8.211 million Algonquin shares in two tranches. Approximately half of the shares will be issued following regulatory approval of the Calpeco ownership transfer and the balance of the shares will be issued following completion of Calpeco’s first rate case which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2012.

As an element of the Agreement, Emera’s allowed common equity interest in Algonquin will be increased from 15% to 25%. Algonquin will seek shareholder approval at its upcoming annual and special general meeting currently scheduled for June 21, 2011.

”This agreement provides clarity and transparency to a business relationship which has existed between Algonquin and Emera for the past two years and is intended to maximize shareholder value for both parties by capitalizing on our respective strengths,” commented Ian Robertson, Chief Executive Officer of Algonquin. “The acquisition by Algonquin of 100% of the CalPeco utility business is consistent with these themes and builds upon the successes achieved to date between Algonquin and Emera.”

”Emera and Algonquin have worked well together since 2009,” said Chris Huskilson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Emera Inc. “Given Algonquin’s successful independent power history and expertise, it makes good sense for Emera to focus its investments in the development, ownership and operation of unregulated renewable electric generating facilities through Algonquin.”

BlackBerry WebWorks SDK 2.0 for Tablet OS and Smartphones, and BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR Now Available

CaribPR Wire, Miami, FL, Tues. April 19, 2011: Today RIM has made two important introductions for developers: the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK 2.0 for Tablet OS and Smartphones, and the final version of its BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR.

The BlackBerry WebWorks SDK 2.0 for Tablet OS and Smartphones

With this release, the following changes are introduced:

 * JavaScript APIs are now separated from the OS. This new architecture will allow developers to easily modify and enhance the existing APIs and package them with their BlackBerry WebWorks application. It will also simplify adding new APIs to applications.

 * The BlackBerry WebWorks framework and all of the APIs are open sourced and are available on GitHub! Developers can now contribute and participate in the evolution of the BlackBerry WebWorks project.

These changes meet developers’ needs for ease of development, flexibility and choice. This important update positively impacts broad categories of developers including new and established developers. They can take advantage of the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK support for web standard technologies (HTML5, CSS3, Java Script) to build rich, well integrated standalone BlackBerry applications. Once developed, these apps can be fully integrated into the BlackBerry ecosystem, and distributed and monetized via BlackBerry App World. Furthermore, there is no need for developers to learn native programming languages to build mobile applications; they can simply use their existing web skills to build amazing BlackBerry apps.

To streamline development work even further, RIM has aligned the versioning of the two platforms so that developers can easily create and deploy applications on the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS and Smartphones – making the best of both worlds.

BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR

Today RIM has also introduced the final version of its BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR which includes the following changes:

 - Special APIs for the BlackBerry PlayBook Plugins for Adobe Flash Builder

- A BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Simulator

- A Getting Started Guide

With this update of the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR, RIM gives developers the opportunity to leverage a strong competitive advantage, the Adobe AIR technology’s capability to enable developers to share code across multiple platforms, thereby offering them the benefit of a wide choice of development environments.

These landmark updates from RIM coincide with the BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet’s availability in stores in North America today and they further empower developers to create amazing applications on this device.

RIM Expands Application Ecosystem for BlackBerry PlayBook

·        BlackBerry PlayBook to support BlackBerry Java and Android apps

·        Native C/C++ development support added, in addition to HTML5, Flash and AIR support

·        Support from leading game engines: Ideaworks Labs (AirPlay) and Unity Technologies (Unity 3)

·        BlackBerry PlayBook becomes a new market opportunity for all the developers who have already created over 25,000 BlackBerry Java apps and more than 200,000 Android apps

CaribPR Wire, Waterloo, ON – March 24, 2011 – Developers wanting to bring their new and existing apps to the highly anticipated BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet will soon have additional tools and options to enhance and expand their commercial opportunities. Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced plans to greatly expand the application ecosystem for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry PlayBook is scheduled to launch in the U.S. and Canada on April 19.

RIM will launch two optional “app players” that provide an application run-time environment for BlackBerry Java® apps and Android v2.3 apps. These new app players will allow users to download BlackBerry Java apps and Android apps from BlackBerry App World and run them on their BlackBerry PlayBook.

In addition, RIM will shortly release the native SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook enabling C/C++ application development on the BlackBerry® Tablet OS. For game-specific developers, RIM is also announcing that it has gained support from two leading game development tooling companies, allowing developers to use the cross-platform game engines from Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies to bring their games to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Support for BlackBerry Java and Android Apps

“The BlackBerry PlayBook is an amazing tablet. The power that we have embedded creates one of the most compelling app experiences available in a mobile computing device today,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “The upcoming addition of BlackBerry Java and Android apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook on BlackBerry App World will provide our users with an even greater choice of apps and will also showcase the versatility of the platform.”

Developers currently building for the BlackBerry or Android platforms will be able to quickly and easily port their apps to run on the BlackBerry Tablet OS thanks to a high degree of API compatibility.  The new optional app players will be available for download from BlackBerry App World and will be placed in a secure “sandbox” on the BlackBerry PlayBook where the BlackBerry Java or Android apps can be run.

Developers will simply repackage, code sign and submit their BlackBerry Java and Android apps to BlackBerry App World. Once approved, the apps will be distributed through BlackBerry App World, providing a new opportunity for many developers to reach BlackBerry PlayBook users.  Users will be able to download both the app players and the BlackBerry Java and Android apps from BlackBerry App World.

The BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry Tablet OS are built on the QNX® Neutrino® microkernel architecture with a 1GHz dual core processor and a leading OpenGL solution, which allows RIM to make this incredibly broad platform support possible.

BlackBerry PlayBook users and developers who are interested in seeing the new app players for BlackBerry Java and Android apps can see demos at BlackBerry World in Orlando, Florida (May 3 to 5, 2011) (www.blackberryworld.com).

 BlackBerry Tablet OS Development Tools

The BlackBerry Tablet OS already supports an incredibly robust platform with support for Web development standard HTML5, through the BlackBerry® WebWorks™ SDK for Tablet OS, and Adobe® AIR®, through the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR. The BlackBerry Tablet OS is built from the ground up to run WebKit and Adobe® Flash® as well, giving developers a fast and true Web experience to leverage.

RIM is also announcing today that the BlackBerry Tablet OS Native Development Kit (NDK), which is currently in limited alpha release, will go into open Beta by this summer and be demonstrated at BlackBerry World. The BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will allow developers to build high-performance, multi-threaded, native C/C++ applications with industry standard GNU toolchains. Developers can create advanced 2D and 3D applications and special effects by leveraging programmable shaders available in hardware-accelerated OpenGL ES 2.0.

Other features of the BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will allow developers to:

  • Take advantage of the QNX POSIX library support and C/C++ compliance for quick and easy application porting and for creating native extensions for both BlackBerry and Android applications
  • Easily integrate device events like gesture swipes and touch screen inputs
  • Integrate the BlackBerry Tablet OS environment into existing code management and build systems using industry standard Eclipse CDT (C/C++ Development Tools)
  • Leverage work done in standard C/C++ to make it easier to bring applications to the BlackBerry Tablet OS
  • Find and fix bugs quickly with provided debug and analysis tools

“The response to the BlackBerry PlayBook from the developer community has been exceptional. Our commitment to supporting HTML5 and Adobe AIR development has resonated and spurred developers to create fun and innovative applications for BlackBerry PlayBook users,” said David Yach, Chief Technology Officer, Software at Research In Motion. “The upcoming BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK beta will add C/C++ tools to our repertoire and gives developers one of the broadest and deepest platforms to develop on.”

Gaming Engines

Building on the power of the BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK, RIM is working with leading gaming and application development technology providers such as Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies to implement their native engines and application development platforms. Developers will be able to take advantage of these engines when building games and other applications for the BlackBerry PlayBook.

The Ideaworks Labs Airplay SDK is expected to include support for the BlackBerry Tablet OS soon, making it easy for publishers and developers to use their existing code to bring their games and apps to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

”Supporting a new OS can be a challenge for developers,” says Alex Caccia, President of Ideaworks Labs, “however, integration of the BlackBerry Tablet OS with the Airplay SDK makes this a non-issue. We think this is a far-sighted move by RIM: the BlackBerry PlayBook is a great device for games and applications, and combining this with content distribution via BlackBerry App World brings an exciting new ecosystem for developers.”

RIM has also been working closely with Unity Technologies, providers of the highly popular, multi-platform Unity development platform and Union, the firm’s games distribution service.  Through Union, dozens of high-quality Unity-authored games are slated to make their way to BlackBerry App World for the BlackBerry Playbook.

“With a sharp focus on the multimedia experience, very powerful hardware, and fantastic games in the pipeline, the BlackBerry Playbook has all the right ingredients to be a mainstream hit,” said Brett Seyler, GM of Union at Unity Technologies. “Through Union, Unity developers have an opportunity to reach a new audience and grow with another great new platform.”

 Availability

The new app players for the BlackBerry PlayBook are expected to be available from BlackBerry App World this summer. More information and demonstrations of the new app players will be shared at BlackBerry World. The BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will be available in beta later this year and will also be showcased at BlackBerry World.

RIM Announces Plans to Provide Carriers with new BBM Mobile Gifting Platform

New mobile gifting platform will integrate with BlackBerry App World and carrier billing systems to allow BlackBerry subscribers to instantly gift airtime, apps and other carrier services from one subscriber to another using BBM

CaribPR Wire, February 14, 2011 – Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced plans for an innovative mobile gifting platform for carriers that will allow one authorized BlackBerry® subscriber to use their post-paid or pre-paid account to conveniently, securely and instantly approve and pay for airtime, apps or other carrier services requested by another BlackBerry subscriber.

The innovative BBM mobile gifting platform will integrate with BlackBerry App World™ and carrier billing systems and allow the gifting requests and approvals to be handled directly between the BlackBerry subscribers using BBM™ (BlackBerry® Messenger) with transactions that are secure, authenticated and non-repudiable. The platform will also allow carriers to more easily sell airtime to BlackBerry prepaid subscribers (for the subscriber’s own use).

“RIM is committed to aligning with carrier business models to deliver innovative and relevant mobile commerce solutions,” said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at RIM. “There will be many usage scenarios and circumstances that can be accommodated through the BBM mobile gifting platform around the world, but the easiest for many people to readily envision and appreciate is the simplified act of a parent approving their child’s request for additional airtime minutes or an app purchase with a single click using BBM.”

The introduction of such convenient and tightly integrated services based on the BBM mobile gifting platform will enhance mobile commerce and enable carriers to provide unique value to their customers. BlackBerry subscribers will be able to buy or gift airtime, apps and other carrier services and charge the purchases to their existing postpaid or prepaid account, or alternatively pay for the purchases through various other payment methods.

Emera Increases Interest in Grand Bahama Power Company Limited

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Dec. 2, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Emera Inc. (TSX: EMA) announced today that it has purchased an additional 55.4 percent of direct and indirect interest in Grand Bahama Power Company Limited (GBPC) from MaruEnergy Grand Bahama Limited, an indirect subsidiary of Marubeni TAQA Caribbean Ltd., for US $82 million. The acquisition brings Emera’s direct and indirect interest in GBPC to 80.4 percent.

In 2008, Emera acquired a 25 percent interest in GBPC through its acquisition of 50 percent of the shares of ICD Utilities Limited (ICDU), the holding company listed on The Bahamas International Securities Exchange (ICD-BISX) which holds 50 percent of the shares of GBPC. This acquisition also makes Emera Inc. the majority shareholder of ICDU. The remaining 19.6 per cent of GBPC is held by other ICDU shareholders.

”Emera’s Caribbean presence is strengthened by our majority ownership in Grand Bahama Power,” said Chris Huskilson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Emera Inc. “We look forward to serving the customers on Grand Bahama and bringing the efficiency and reliability of the electrical system on the island up to Emera standards.”

”We welcome Emera’s increased investment in the Grand Bahama Power Corporation,” said Minister Neko Grant, Minister of Public Works and Transport. “We look forward to working with Emera to the mutual benefit of the company and Grand Bahama.”

GBPC is the only utility operator on Grand Bahama Island, serving 19,000 customers.  The generation consists of one facility with 137 MW of installed oil-fired capacity.  The Grand Bahama Port Authority Limited regulates the utility and has granted GBPC a licensed, regulated and exclusive franchise to produce, transmit and distribute electricity on the Island until 2054.  There is a fuel pass through mechanism and flexible tariff adjustment policies to ensure that costs are recovered and a reasonable return is earned.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals in the Bahamas. Through its investment in GBPC and ICDU, Emera will appoint a number of new Bahamian members to the GBPC Board of Directors.  Emera will finance today’s acquisition through existing credit facilities.
