Caribbean Media, Organizations Urged By Carib ID To Help Count All Caribbean Americans

CaribPR Wire, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Mar. 10, 2010: `Ensure you fill out and return the 2010 U.S. Census form while writing in your Caribbean country of origin or your ancestry under the Some Other Race section of the U.S. Census form while filling in your race on question 9.`

 That`s the message Carib ID, the movement started in 2008 by Felicia Persaud to get Caribbean nationals accurately counted across the U.S., is hoping the media and organizations will keep on pushing nationally as the count-down begins to the arrival of the forms in mail boxes across the United States.

 `We need the help of every single Caribbean national in the U.S., especially the media and the many myriad of organizations, party promoters and church leaders who are always pursuing advertising and sponsorship dollars to ensure we count as Caribbean nationals in the 2010 Census,` said Persaud, Carib ID`s founder, on Thursday. `Census forms will begin arriving by March 17th. It is imperative that we not take 10 minutes to immediately fill out and return the forms while writing in our nationality or ancestry under the Some Other Race section but that we also tell a friend, tell a neighbor, call up a family member, email and blog about it and let`s truly stand up as proud Caribbean nationals and count.` 

Persaud also endorsed a call from attorney Marlon Hill, host of `The Peoples` Politics` commentary on Caribbean Riddims, WZAB 880AM, every Saturday from 4 p.m., and Soca De Vote, for all Caribbean broadcasters, deejays and radio personalities across the U.S. to complete their Census forms LIVE on their shows while urging all of their listeners to join them in doing the same.

 Hill is set to complete his form live on radio WZAB 880AM in South Florida on March 20th at 4pmEST, while Persaud will do the same in New York on WWRL 1600 AM.

 Chris Chaplin, of the Philadelphia Mayor`s Commission on African and Caribbean Affairs and Carib ID board member, said his committee has been active in the city of Philadelphia in getting the word out about the importance of filling out the Census form and of completing Question 9.

 His committee is also working with the African Census Complete Count Committee for a Census Awareness Weekend in Philadelphia from March 12-14.

 `Every Caribbean national must be mobilized and be participative in this historic count,` added Pastor Gil Montrose, a CaribID partner. `You must fill out that form and return it. There shouldn`t be any fear even if you are undocumented.`

 Census numbers determines every aspect of our lives in the United States, from federal funding for smaller class sizes and better or more schools in our neighborhoods, to better transportation and health care and secure neighborhoods to even if our roads are cleaned during snow storms and our garbage collected.

 For media, organizations, festivals and event promoters, it determines whether corporations will consider the market place as economically viable enough to invest their hard earned sponsorship or advertising dollars.

 For the undocumented, it is imperative that they fill out and keep a copy of the form as it provides them with proof that they are living in the U.S. so that once immigration reform comes around, they can take advantage and get a green card.

 CaribPR Wire, Washington, DC – The urgent need for better schools, roads, and healthcare in disadvantaged neighborhoods are only a few of the reasons people of color should be eager to complete and return their census form, Melanie L. Campbell told several Black groups assembled at the US Capitol today for The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s (The National Coalition) Unity Diaspora Coalition (UDC) 30-Day Countdown to National Census Day and launch of the UDC Poster & Social Media Competition.

 “The Black community was hurting before the economy crashed. It’s worse and we’re tired of getting the short end of the stick,” said Campbell, executive director and CEO of The National Coalition, and convener of the UDC. “It’s also time to hold our own community accountable. People keep looking for change, we’re the change. We have come together to hit the streets to urge our community to answer ten easy questions to receive ten years of benefits.”

 Congressman William “Lacy” Clay, chair, Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census and National Archives, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, chair, Congressional Black Caucus, and Congressman Al Green (D-TX), were on hand to stress the importance of getting everyone counted. They pointed out that the census impacts political representation, economic opportunity and helps to identify where action is needed to protect civil rights.

 The press conference marks the launch of the UDC’s aggressive 30-day push to remind the African, African American, Caribbean and Afro-Latino community of the importance of filling out and returning the Census form. The coalition also announced their partnership with the  American Federation of Teachers and National Education Association for the UDC Poster & Social Media Competition which seeks decrease the undercount of children.

 The UDC Poster & Social Media Competition targets school-age children and young adults and challenges the youth to use their artistic talent to express why  the Census is important to their community.  Members of the historic coalition will also help to clarify the widely publicized race question on the census form.

 “It’s important that we make sure that immigrants understand that they can provide more than one answer on question nine,” said  Claire A. Nelson Ph.D., founder and president, Institute of Caribbean Studies. “The Black immigrant population has grown 47% since 2000. When you consider that census count will help allocate more than $400 billion a year in federal money to communities, the sense of urgency to be counted becomes apparent,” Nelson added.

 The Unity Diaspora Coalition is advising Black immigrant communities that don’t see themselves represented on question nine of the form, to check the appropriate box for  their race, then fill in their country of origin on the line below. A poster size sample of question nine was displayed at the press conference illustrating a check in the box for “Black, African Am, or Negro” and Jamaican filled in on the “other” line below.

 Benjamin Afrifa, chairman of African Federation adds, “In addition to the fact that many immigrants cling to national origins rather than racial identities, immigrants are often afraid to answer questions for the government. Our coalition is made up of trusted voices in the community that can convince residents that it is illegal for any of the information from the census questionnaire to be shared with any third party including immigration.”

 The UDC is working with grassroots organizations to get hard-to-count communities in nine cities counted. Over the next 30-days local sites will host census countdown press conferences, town hall meetings and other census events. Cities are: Houston, TX; Jackson, MS; Gary, IN; Chicago, IL; New Orleans, LA; Los Angeles, CA; NYC, NY; Atlanta, GA; and Miami, FL.

 Another important issue is where to count prisoners. Although most state constitutions and election law statutes say a prison cell is not a residence, Census Bureau practices count incarcerated people as residents of the prison location. Makani Themba-Nixon, executive director, The Praxis Project said, “The Bureau’s new data product will be helpful in assisting state and local governments to avoid prison-based gerrymandering because they won’t have lack of data as an excuse.”

Associated Press Puts Spotlight On Carib ID

CaribPR Wire, NEW YORK, NY, Weds. Feb. 24, 2010: Carib ID, the movement founded in 2008 by Felicia Persaud to get Caribbean nationals accurately counted in the U.S., gained a promotional shot in the arm on Wednesday as the Associated Press turned its spotlight on the organization.

Persaud has been working diligently to encourage the Caribbean communities to become accurately counted by the Census through a push for a Caribbean origin category on future census forms and a write in campaign for 2010.

For this current U.S. Census, CaribID is urging all Caribbean nationals and those with Caribbean ancestry to fill out the form and ensure they tick their race but to write their nationality or ancestry as well on the line under “some other race” on Census Forms being distributed next month.  The story has so far appeared on over 175 media outlets based on the AP syndication, including the New York Times and the LA Times, and also generated a CBS News interview.

Brightstar Supports Relief Efforts in Haiti

Company Implements Several Key Initiatives to Help Support Those Affected by the Earthquake in Haiti

A Month After the Quake, Haiti Needs to Rebuild

 3,000 Jobs & “Tagging” Homes

Although providing relief will continue for a few months, PADF, along with its partners Hollywood Unites for Haiti (HUFH) and the Organization of American States (OAS), has initiated its recovery and reconstruction in key areas of Port-au-Prince and the Southeast province.

 Starting next week, PADF will put to work 3,000 Haitians in a massive clean-up operation in areas such as Cite Soleil and Bel Air. PADF’s program, which uses funds from the World Bank that were provided to the Haitian government, will eventually employ 6,000 Haitians during six months.

In a separate program, PADF starts to work on Feb. 12 with leading earthquake recovery expert Kit Miyamoto to “tag” homes.

 The California-based structural engineer uses a high-tech inspection process to categorize buildings: “Green tag” means a home can be occupied; “Yellow tag” allows limited access until repairs are made; and a “red tag” indicates that it unsafe.

 ”Many engineers are red tagging buildings for destruction, but no one is placing the very vital green and yellow tags on homes that can be used,” says John Sanbrailo, PADF’s Executive Director. “Reassuring Haitians as to which homes are safe, as well as the rooms that may need to be repaired, is critical to getting people off the streets and into their homes.”

 PADF’s goal is to inspect 20,000 buildings during the next few months, which Miyamoto will reach by training 50 Haitian engineers to use the technology.

Haitian Economic Development Foundation Announces that Electricite d'Haiti, the Government-Owned Electric Utility, has Restored Power to Section of Port Au Prince

LDS Church Provides Relief Effort in Haiti

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The devastating earthquake in Haiti has shattered millions of lives, but the relief efforts and outpouring of support by organizations and individuals worldwide offer hope. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been working diligently since the disaster to provide aid to the people of Haiti through its humanitarian aid program. Hundreds of thousands of pounds of relief supplies have arrived already, and more are being shipped.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is one of the fastest growing Christian faiths in the world, with over 13 million members world-wide. As committed Christians with strong traditional values, the Church actively participates in humanitarian efforts, from small-scale local projects in hospitals, schools and communities, to large-scale emergency relief efforts such as the recent Haiti earthquake.

In the Caribbean islands, there are more than 150,000 members of the LDS Church, in 369 congregations. Over 15,000 of these members live in Haiti, half of these calling Port-au-Prince home.

Relief Supplies Provided by the Church
Five air shipments of aid provided by the Church have arrived and are being used in Haiti. They include food, medical supplies, communications equipment, tents, tarps, water filtration bottles, blankets, newborn kits, wheelchairs, first aid kits, portable toilets and other items. Those five flights include a total of nearly 375,000 pounds of relief supplies. Partners United Airlines, Islamic Relief USA, Airline Ambassadors and UPS have worked with the Church to provide transport for these shipments.

Additionally, four truckloads of relief supplies have arrived in Haiti with supplies the Church procured in the Dominican Republic. On the ground in Haiti, the Church is working with partners Food for the Poor and CARE to distribute supplies.

Local Church leaders closest to the situation provide the direction for what supplies are most needed for people in their areas. Future shipments will continue to bring those relief supplies.

“Normal daily activity has come to a stop in Haiti. Helping to restore normalcy in the midst of devastation will be our greatest goal. Our focus will be on helping people become self-reliant again,” said Elder Francisco J. Viñas, the LDS Church area president who oversees the Church in Haiti.

Medical Relief
A team of five medical personnel coordinated by the Church arrived on Friday, 15 January, from the Dominican Republic to assist the injured. Another team of 16 medical professionals from the United States arrived on 18 January and provided emergency care for those needing medical attention. A revolving core team of doctors from the Church remains in Haiti providing general health care, follow-up care for injuries, as well as for sickness and communicable disease common after disasters.

Church Meetinghouses as Shelters
All of the Church’s meetinghouses in Haiti have been left largely undamaged. Local Church leaders report that nine chapels in Haiti have been used to shelter as many as 5,000 people in local communities where the chapels are located. Several truckloads of food and other relief supplies have been shipped to the chapels, and doctors sent by the Church have provided treatment to injured and sick individuals who are taking shelter there.

Generosity of Members and Friends of the Church
In the first few days after the earthquake the LDS Church received donations in the millions of US dollars from concerned members of the community, specifically for aid in Haiti. Church members in the Caribbean Area have been invited to dedicate their February monthly fast offering to the Haiti relief effort. When fasting, members traditionally donate the money they save by not eating two meals to the church for providing financial help to those in need; those who can donate more are encouraged to do so.

An official statement from the Church on January 22, 2010 also addressed the emotional trauma the Haitian people are experiencing in the wake of the devastating earthquake.

“Money is not the only need in Haiti,” the statement explains. “People are frightened, bewildered, and wholly uncertain about their future. In addition to what people can do in helping with food, water and shelter, there needs to be a calming influence over that troubled nation. Sea Box, Inc. Sends Relief Container to Haiti – Including ShelterPak for Converting Container to Housing

PHILADELPHIA and EAST RIVERTON, N.J., Feb. 1  /PRNewswire/ — Sea Box, Inc., an ISO-certified shipping container manufacturing and modification company (www.seabox.com) is sending a container filled with relief supplies – including their ShelterPak for converting the container box into habitable housing – to Haiti. The aid was prompted by a company engineer, Werner Guerrier, a Haitian native with a large extended family in Carrefour, Port au Prince, Haiti who lost his sister and nephew in the earthquake. 

In an effort to support their co-worker and other survivors of the earthquake, Sea Box employees have donated food, water and clothing and the owners of Sea Box have donated a 20 foot shipping container (and shipping) – complete with a ShelterPAK module already installed. 

Sea Box created the “ShelterPAK” six years ago in response to demand for easily installed basic housing units for disaster areas.  Designed to fit into a standard 20 foot shipping container, when installed, it turns a basic shipping container into a livable shelter.  

The Sea Box container with ShelterPAK is destined for Carrefour, Mr. Guerrier’s hometown where the food, water and clothing will be distributed to JEBCA D’HAITI, an organization of the church M.E.B.S.H. de Cote-Plage, directed by Pastor Rev. Samson Dorilas.  Sadly, 39 members of this church lost their lives, and many more lost their houses. JEBCA D’HAITI will be in charge of the distribution of all the items donated and intend to use the shelter as a medical treatment center.

OneBeacon Community Donates $71,000 to Support Haitian Relief Efforts

International Breast Milk Project Delivers Donor Breast Milk to Orphaned and Sick Babies in Haiti

Lesbian and Gay Haiti Fund Tops the List of Donors to American Red Cross

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ — Within days of the creation of the American Red Cross LGBT Haiti Relief Fund, a Red Cross representative stated the fund has already raised more money than many of the huge corporate donors. This was accomplished by significant outreach efforts to the LGBT community via donors and activists along with a massive email campaign to the members of three LGBT cruise companies, Olivia, Atlantis and RSVP. Within a week, the community has raised over $150,000 for the fund.

Staffing Company Sends Anesthesiologists to Haiti

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ — National Anesthesia Services is sending out a call for volunteer anesthesia providers to join their Haiti Anesthesia Relief program and go to Haiti to provide assistance to the victims of the earthquake disaster as soon as February 1st said National president Stephen Read.

Teens Pack Lunch to Feed the Hungry in 'Brown Bag It For Haiti' Campaign

FAIRFIELD, Conn., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ — February 1 marks the beginning of “Brown Bag It For Haiti” week, when teenagers nationwide pledge to pack a school lunch instead of buying one, and to donate their lunch money to feed hungry kids in Haiti or closer to home.

 Kirsch said her classmates spend anywhere from $2.50 to $5 for school lunch each day. Like many highschoolers, they pay by swiping a card that debits an account, instead of reaching into their pocket for cash. “It’s really easy to not realize how much you’re spending, and that that bag of chips is $1.25,” Kirsch said.

 Saving money is one reason Kirsch prefers to bring a bag lunch to school. Another is because she’s environmentally conscious and can’t stand the waste generated by all that packaged stuff. Third, she wants to ensure that what she’s eating will fuel her well during the day.

 ”I bring healthier things than I would buy,” she said. Her favorite lunches are “big leftovers from dinner” that she transforms into sandwiches or wraps, or combines with fruit or carrots or cheese.
