Aeropostale, Inc. and DoSomething.org Join Teens Nationwide to Support Homeless Teens in Haiti and the U.S.

Teen Retailer will match the first 100,000 jeans donated thru the Teens for Jeans campaign with brand new jeans for Haiti disaster victims

NEW YORK, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — In support of its third annual “Teens for Jeans” initiative with teen not-for-profit DoSomething.org, NYC-based teen retailer Aeropostale, Inc. (NYSE: ARO) announced it will be matching the first 100,000 pairs donated with brand new jeans to be delivered to the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

”Teens for Jeans” raises awareness about the youth homelessness epidemic by inspiring teens across the U.S. and Canada to collect gently worn jeans and donate them to homeless youth in their own communities. In response to the earthquake in Haiti, Aeropostale, Inc. and DoSomething.org are extending the campaign’s reach beyond the U.S. and Canada to help teens affected by the disaster.

”Most teens don’t have credit cards or disposable income, but they want to make a difference,” says DoSomething.org Chief Marketing Officer Aria Finger.  “DoSomething.org never asks teens for money — we just want their passion, creativity, time and now their jeans.”

The campaign collected over 200,000 pairs of jeans in 2009 and this year teens are already gearing up to top that effort.

“Teens for Jeans is one of the cornerstones of Aeropostale’s charitable efforts to benefit teens. What makes this year’s campaign so special is the opportunity for us all to think locally and act globally,” says Aeropostale’s Senior Vice President of Marketing, Scott Birnbaum.  “The crisis in Haiti makes us painfully aware that help is needed not only in our own backyards but in communities everywhere.”

Twilight: New Moon star Ashley Greene and funnyman Justin Long came together to shoot a Public Service Announcement for the campaign.

”When I heard the statistics, it was hard to ignore. Teens everywhere want to help with this important issue of youth homelessness and now the earthquake in Haiti,” explains Ashley Greene.” I want to do everything I can to help young people take action, and ‘Teens for Jeans’ is a great way for them to get involved.”

”I got involved with this campaign because it is so important that no teen goes this winter without warm clothes,” Justin Long adds. “I want every fan to join me in bringing their jeans into any Aero store to make this the most successful year ever.”

You can view their PSA at TeensforJeans.com.

Starting Tuesday, January 19th until Sunday, February 14th, people are encouraged to bring in any brand of their gently worn jeans to any Aeropostale store in the U.S. and Canada. Aeropostale, Inc. and DoSomething.org will make sure the jeans are donated teens in Haiti as well as to one of the 600 local youth shelters that have been selected as partners.  As an extra incentive for those who donate, Aeropostale will give an additional 25% off a new pair of jeans, though no purchase is necessary. Donors will also have the chance to win signed jeans from Kellan Lutz, Kelly Clarkson, cast members of 90210, Glee, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill and many more of today’s young stars.

In addition to getting customers involved in stores, Aeropostale, Inc. and DoSomething.org are encouraging teenagers in their local high schools and colleges to coordinate “Teens for Jeans” school drives.  Students who collect more than 500 pairs of jeans will receive a banner for their school, recognition on the DoSomething.org and Aeropostale websites and the chance to win a pizza party for their entire class.

PADF-OAS to Focus on 2 Heavily Damaged Areas in Haiti

Non-Profit assigned part of downtown Port-au-Prince, Southeast Province

WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — A heavily damaged area of downtown Port-au-Prince and communities in the Southeast province have been assigned to the Pan American Development Foundation and its partners for immediate relief, the non-profit organization announced. www.PanAmericanRelief.org

Haitian civil defense authorities designated these areas because of PADF’s long development experience in these communities and the urgent need for the organization’s extensive background in disaster management.

PADF’s assigned zones are: Port-au-Prince’s downtown section of Bel Air, a heavily residential area known for its beautiful cathedral; and the Southeast province, which includes the seaside cities of Jacmel, Cayes-Jacmel and Marigot.

”The Southeast province was hit as hard as Port-au-Prince but has yet to receive attention by the international media,” says John Sanbrailo, PADF’s Executive Director. “With such a large mandate, PADF is urging individuals and companies to support our earthquake relief efforts by calling (877) 572-4484 or visiting www.PanAmericanRelief.org. It’s vital to people’s survival.”

Prior to the devastating 7.0 earthquake, these Southeast province communities (which are about a three-hour drive from Port-au-Prince) were severely damaged by hurricanes and tropical storms 18 months ago. PADF will provide relief supplies to these affected communities via the border city of Pedernales in the Dominican Republic.

Relief to Bel Air will come through PADF’s office in the capital, which receives its supplies from a land route that connects with the border city of Jimani in the Dominican Republic.

PADF – which is collaborating with the Organization of American States (OAS), the non-profit Hollywood Unites for Haiti (HUFH) and other groups – has eight offices in Haiti, with its country headquarters in Port-au-Prince. PADF has worked in the country for nearly 30 years on economic development, protecting human rights and responding to natural disasters.

Meanwhile, actor and President of Hollywood Unites for Haiti, Jimmy Jean-Louis (”The Haitian” on NBC’s “Heroes”) arrived in Port-au-Prince late Saturday to reconnect with his family and to raise awareness of the crisis. What he found stunned him.

”It looked like a war had happened,” says Jean-Louis, who was shocked by the magnitude of destruction and the desperate need of the people.

Jean-Louis is a spokesperson for the PADF-OAS-HUFH campaign to raise money for relief and reconstruction of Haiti. They may do so by calling (877) 572-4484 or visiting www.PanAmericanRelief.org to make a donation.

 About HUFH

Hollywood Unites For Haiti is a non-profit charitable aid organization based in Los Angeles that puts 100 percent of its donations directly into the cause of helping Haitian citizens and raising global awareness of ways in which people can help.

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Citizen-reporting platform Ushahidi has gained international renown this week for its innovative contribution to information-gathering in the wake of the earthquake in Haiti. Now, Ushahidi, in partnership with U.S. Department of State and others, has introduced an SMS shortcode for subscribers on the DigiCell network in Haiti to send text messages free of charge.  Digicel subscribers in Haiti can text 4636 with location and description of emergencies and missing persons. Ushahidi’s Haiti platform is live at: http://haiti.ushahidi.com.

Please note that the SMS shortcode is dependent on local telecom infrastructure — if the infrastructure fails, the local SMS service will not work. However, there are several ways that incidents may be reported:

 BACKGROUND:

Minutes after the earthquake was felt in Haiti, a global team of staff and volunteers deployed Ushahidi, an incident reporting and mapping tool widely known for tracking post-election violence in Kenya, conflict in Gaza, and national elections in India. As the primary platform for reporting incidents in Haiti, Ushahidi serves as a vital tool to aid decision-making, direct resources and understand the situation in real time.

The Ushahidi team is collaborating with many organizations working in Haiti and beyond: the U.S. Department of State, the United Nations, the International Network of Crisis Mappers and the major telecommunications operators in Haiti, among others. A team of developers, humanitarians, academics, and international development practitioners have been working to ensure the site is stable and that incoming reports are accurately categorized and geo-located.

The system is currently tracking information in the several categories and subcategories including: emergencies, threats, responder activities, news about individuals, and the location of resources.
