LIME Celebrates Labor Day Weekend In New York’s Caribbean Diaspora

CaribPR Wire, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Thurs. Sept. 15, 2011: For the second consecutive year, LIME was among top sponsors of the 44th Annual West Indian Carnival Festival that drew over three million to Eastern Parkway on Labor Day in Brooklyn, U.S.A. on September 5th.  A huge LIME-sponsored float from KARMA made its way down the Parkway as over two dozen LIME girls showed off the company’s colors with rags and shiny costumes and as executives stressed the company’s commitment to the Diaspora is not just short-term but here to stay.

While the LIME float urged fans to send minutes home to family and friends, the message at the company’s booth on the parade route created a buzz, as customers from the Diaspora and over 14 Caribbean islands lined up to take advantage of the 100 bonus credit offered over the weekend to any LIME mobile phone. Among those welcoming the LIME promotion was Jamaican national Caroline Greaves and her daughter, who have been Brooklyn residents for the past thirty years.

“I am thinking of trying their new TopUp plan which gives double credit, you cannot beat this kind of deal,” Greaves said, as the LIME float with a number of costumed clad revelers passed by. “Many of my friends are switching to LIME because they like their affordable rates and products.”

Early on Monday, Regional Head of Sponsorship for LIME, Sheldon Keens-Douglas, spent the morning with Mayor Mike Bloomberg and other city elected officials and business leaders at the annual kick-off breakfast of the West Indian American Day Carnival Association, reiterating the company’s commitment to the Diaspora and organizations like WIADCA.

”We wouldn’t miss it,” he explained. “After our participation last year we knew we would be back. The ‘E’ in LIME is refers to ourability to bring cultural activities home to our customers through exciting products like LIME TV, Video on Demand and LIME Mobile TV and the West Indian Carnival Festival is a great complement in that regard.”

LIME’s presence at the carnival brought the curtains down on a weekend long series of events that included sponsorship of the inaugural Reggae, Rhythm and Blues concert on Sunday, September 4th at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, NY, that featured performances from the likes of Movado, Machel Montano, John Holt, I-Octane, Kenneth “Baby Face” Edmonds” and Monica.

“For this summer, our double-top up promotion – which offered each customer who bought credit to get two times the amount paid for – was all about keeping in touch with friends and family back home. And the festival is about keeping in touch with that Caribbean legacy and heritage. There is a synergy here that LIME, with our own legacy of over 140 years, is proud to support,” said Keens-Douglas.

The company’s support also made the EVERYBODY’S Calypso & Soca Tent-Revue at the Tropical Paradise Ballroom that featured the world’s top calypso & soca superstars, such as The Mighty Sparrow, the Calypso King of the World, Shadow, Becket, Denyse Plummer, Rikki Jai and Edwin Yearwood, from August 29th – September 2nd, a reality; along with Brass Fest on Friday, September 2 at the grounds of the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, NY, which saw thousands of Caribbean music fans jump and wave with LIME to the music of the 2011 Carnival King Machel Montano & Kes The Band, Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy and WCR. LIME also reinforced their commitment to family with the support of the Kiddies Carnival at the Brooklyn Museum grounds Saturday – as thousands of children proudly parade in their carnival costumes.

The telecommunications giant also returned for the second consecutive year as the platinum sponsor of the Caribbean Netball Association’s (CANA) Summer Netball League and Caribbean Cup 2011, which featured teams representing Jamaica, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Sri Lanka and Barbados. The round-robin Caribbean Cup tournament this past Sunday, September 11th, 2011, brought the curtain down on the summer long netball carnival which kicked off on June 4th at the Lincoln Terrace Park in Brooklyn, New York. LIME’s sponsorship included uniforms, prizes, and telecommunications services for the tournament at the various games that took place over the summer.

CaribPR Wire, SANTO DOMINGO, DR, Mon. Sept. 5, 2011: Declared a resounding success, Caribbean Export officially ended its inaugural trade fair, Design Caribbean, at 8:00 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4th

The True Beauty of Local Artisans – DESIGN CARIBBEAN 2011

designcaribbean

CaribPR Wire, Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, August 24, 2011: ‘Proud, bold and creative’ are just three words that can be used to describe Caribbean artisans and the products they are able to produce.  Drawing on a range of influences Caribbean culture is a convergence of African, European and Amerindian heritage. This collective union has produced a unique environment from which artisans are able to create something rare and beautiful which appeals not only to their captive audience of the Caribbean public and buyers but also international buyers looking for something different and exceptional.

Caribbean Export has adjusted its 14 year old Caribbean Gift and Craft show to match the ever-changing need to supply products that encapsulate all of what the Caribbean is about. One of the most notable comments from the historical Gift Shows is that there have been too many imports.  Whether from China or India, these imports may be inexpensive but the product is mass produced, uninteresting and not unique to the Caribbean. Tourists are simply too well travelled to be interested in making that purchase no matter how inexpensive it is and most are looking for a breath of fresh that they can take back home and show-off to family and friends.

Maroon Baskets

Caribbean Export has taken this feedback into consideration and has spent the past year vetting quality Caribbean artisans making it easy for Hotel Gift Shops and general home stores in the region to access this quality type of product in one convenient location – the re branded Design Caribbean show.

All of the artisans at the event have been carefully selected by a panel of judges to showcase their work at this leading Caribbean trade show.  Everyone attending will find high quality, high end products that are not available in every street stall, shop window or market.

Unlike their rivals from mass producing countries such as China these products are special, dynamic and rare and reflect everything the region represents – beauty and talent. All of the goods on offer will be luxury, high caliber, design conscious pieces that are lovingly crafted to appeal to the public as well as boutique buyers and anyone looking for a stellar product that won’t be left on the shelf.

The new show DESIGN CARIBBEAN, takes place September 1-4, 2011, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic . September 1st, is for Trade only. It will take place at the Occidental El Embajador one of the region’s most exclusive venues in the Dominican Republic’s capital Santo Domingo.

DSCN3329

Design Caribbean is more than a trade show as buyers from across the world and members of the public will be treated to a feast of talent that cannot be readily found under one roof. Sponsored by the European Union, FedEx, Abordage and American Airlines among others, those attending the event will also be treated to a spa and wellness section, a film screening, a fashion event and a rum experience as well as musical performances from the region’s top international performers such as Alison Hinds who is labeled regionally the Soca Queen and has had worldwide success with her hit ‘Roll’.

Come to Santo Domingo from September 1st – 4th 2011 not just to ‘Celebrate the beautiful’ but to ‘Celebrate the Caribbean’.

Design Caribbean is organized by Caribbean Export, a trade and promotion organizationwith 15 state regions, whose mandate is to “take Caribbean excellence to the world.”

This spirit is captured and reflected in the originality, boldness and inherent creativity that mirror the experience of those who landed on our shores from disparate parts of the globe.
