NEW YORK, April 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — JetBlue Airways (Nasdaq: JBLU), the largest carrier in Puerto Rico in terms of capacity, is making it even easier to travel between San Juan and neighboring Caribbean islands with the announcement of plans to launch nonstop daily service to St. Maarten (SXM), subject to receipt of government approval. This new route will be the value airline’s eighth non-stop destination out of San Juan and its third out of St. Maarten.

Flights between San Juan and St. Maarten will go on sale at www.jetblue.com soon, with service to begin November 17. The new service will be JetBlue’s second intra-Caribbean route, with existing service between San Juan and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

”We are thrilled to announce further growth to our San Juan focus city,” said Robin Hayes, Chief Commercial Officer for JetBlue. “The support of the Puerto Rican community has been remarkable and we look forward to continuing to provide them more options for travel throughout the Caribbean region.”

”Increasing air access to Puerto Rico is essential for our tourism industry, commercial development, and homeport cruise market,” added the Secretary of Economic Development and Commerce of Puerto Rico, Jose R. Perez-Riera. “We are grateful for the support that great airline partners like JetBlue have given to our market. This new service strengthens our position as a hub of the Caribbean and is the result of a successful working relationship that we have maintained with our partner airlines.”

This summer, JetBlue will have 27 daily departures from San Juan and 34 daily departures from Puerto Rico, including Aguadilla and Ponce. This new route will provide convenient connections to St. Maarten from New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK), Boston’s Logan (BOS), Orlando International (MCO), and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International (FLL) airports. The new service follows the recent addition of flights from San Juan to both Tampa and Jacksonville.

”It is of high importance to improve regional air access in the Caribbean for the benefit of all the economies of the region,” said Jaime A. Lopez-Diaz, Chief Development Officer of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce of Puerto Rico. “This new JetBlue service is a perfect example of how working together, the region can increase the supply of air traffic.”

”The Puerto Rico Tourism Company is enthusiastic about JetBlue’s new service from Puerto Rico to St. Maarten, as it provides essential access to and from the Dutch/French Caribbean, one our top ten markets in the region,” said Mario Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. “Visitors from St. Maarten/St. Martin visit Puerto Rico for diverse reasons like shopping, medical, and sports and cultural events, among others. This market generated an average of 1,900 room nights in calendar year 2010, principally in small and medium hotels. This new service strengthens Puerto Rico’s position as the main connecting point to numerous destinations within the region.”

”I am pleased to learn of JetBlue’s decision to begin servicing the SJU - SXM route,” said the Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs and Transportation of St. Maarten, Honorable Franklin Meyers. “Following our recent discussions in New York, JetBlue has proven to be a valuable partner since its initial entry into St. Maarten in 2008, providing daily service from New York as well as servicing St. Maarten from Boston. I am confident that together we will grow the San Juan – SXM route. This new service will open up the possibility for potential visitors from key source markets besides Puerto Rico, namely, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando and Boston, to come to the destination.”

”The JetBlue, St. Maarten partnership has changed the landscape of tourism in St. Maarten,” said Director of Tourism of St. Maarten, Regina LaBega. “The airfares from key source markets, for example, have become more affordable, therefore resulting in a larger volume of visitors to the destination as well as a higher visitor expenditure on island. The new SJU-SXM service by JetBlue, using the famous Embraer aircraft will certainly boost traffic in both directions, consequently contributing positively to our economy.”

Service to St. Maarten will be operated by JetBlue’s Embraer E190 aircraft, offering two-by-two, comfortable all-leather seating. The airline’s customers also enjoy a first-checked bag free (a), award-winning customer service and unlimited, complimentary snacks and drinks.

17th Annual FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show Is a Great Success

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Delegates from all over the world and every facet within the private and public sectors, along with roughly 100 cruise executives, began to gather in Santo Domingo on Monday, October 25th for the FCCA Conference & Trade Show.

The start of the Conference was marked by the FCCA Golf Classic, which brought together some of the key players of the cruise industry and its destination partners in teams of four to discuss the latest trends and gather business advice over a friendly game of golf. The day also allowed for the attendees to situate themselves and for the Trade Show participants to prepare their booths for the crowd composed of nearly 1,000, while the FCCA Platinum Members had a chance to start their one-on-one meetings.

Tuesday was the official grand opening for the Trade Show, with the audience gathered to see some of the best offerings from the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and more. It also marked the beginning of the one-on-one meetings and workshops that continue all the way through the Conference’s close. It also officially commenced the event with the Conference Opening Ceremony, which sparked enough interest in the Dominican Republic to reach its president, Leonel Fernandez, who was able to listen to the speeches of the Honorable Francisco Javier Garcia, minister of tourism; Michele Paige, president of the FCCA; Kevin Sheehan, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line and chairman of the FCCA; Richard Sasso, president and CEO of MSC Cruises; and the winners of the FCCA Foundation’s Essay Contest. The ceremony also commemorated the Dominican Republic’s culture with song and dance from Carnival and a welcome party at the Museo de las Casa Reales.

Wednesday brought together the CEOs, presidents and ministers for private meetings to foster further communication and relationships between the cruise lines and the destinations’ governments, while continuing with the one-on-one meetings, workshops and Trade Show. The day culminated at the decadent Dominican Republic Night Extravaganza at the Sans Souci Cruise Terminal.

Thursday was another successful day, as the attendees concluded their meetings and workshops and began to make plans to pursue the relationships formed throughout the event and possibly to attend next year’s event in San Juan, Puerto Rico, taking place from October 3-7, 2011. The night closed with a cocktail reception and a closing party to make the participants completely comfortable as they finalized this year’s discussions and prepared for the times ahead.

Dominican Republic Takes Center Stage of Caribbean Cruise Tourism

DR Ministry of Tourism welcomes 17th annual Florida Caribbean Cruise Association Conference

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ — The Dominican Republic (DR) located in the heart of the Caribbean, is the center for all things cruise this week as the DR Ministry of Tourism welcomes the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) conference in Santo Domingo Oct. 25-29. The Caribbean’s leading tourism destination, the DR will welcome the cruise industry’s best and brightest executives, marketers and government leaders to share their vision to accommodate the ever-increasing demand to cruise to DR ports during workshops, meetings and trade shows in the historic capital city.

“Santo Domingo’s world-class port and modern cruise terminals have a privileged geographic location at the city’s marine entrance on the Ozama River, just steps away from the ancient Colonial City. The Port of Santo Domingo is also the gateway to our vast country with over 1,000 miles of coastline,” said DR Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier Garcia. “The DR’s location at the center of the Caribbean is very well-suited for flexible itinerary planning and easy transfers throughout the country,” he added.

Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association President Michele M. Paige said, “The FCCA annual conference provides a superb forum to cruise industry leaders and partners to exchange information, share ideas and cultivate valuable business relationships. Our conference in Santo Domingo is the most important conference of the year for the Caribbean cruise industry. Attendees will experience first-hand why Santo Domingo is so popular with cruise passengers who crave an exciting cultural and historic destination that offers a multitude of opportunities to interact with authentic Dominican culture.”

”Santo Domingo offers so much to cruise lines and passengers. Dominicans express their unique ancestry through their music, food, art, architecture and friendly hospitality. FCCA delegates and visitors alike will discover much expression of Dominican culture in Santo Domingo,” added Garcia.

With cruise tourism to the DR increasing each year, the Dominican government has a long term strategy that includes new ports and reinvesting in existing ports to ensure more cruise lines and passenger demand for the unique Dominican experience in the decades to come.

In 2009, 500,000 cruise ship passengers visited the Sans Souci and Don Diego Terminals in Santo Domingo, the Port of La Romana on the Southeast Coast; and the Samana Peninsula on the Northeast Coast. During their exploration of the DR, passengers and crew from over 400 ships spent a total of $80 million dollars in 2009. The DR Ministry of Tourism expects a five percent jump in cruise ship arrivals for 2010 due to the increasing awareness of the DR as a unique destination engaging visitors in vibrant Dominican culture, arts, history, music and gastronomy.

The Dominican Republic (DR) is closer than you think with fourteen international and national airports, three major seaports and world-class marinas making travel to the Caribbean’s second largest island a breeze. Rich in history and culture, today the DR has developed into a sophisticated destination offering both Dominican and European flavors to over 3.9 million visitors each year. Named #1 Golf Destination in Caribbean & Latin America by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, the DR boasts 25 designer golf courses, upscale resorts, pristine nature, and sophisticated cities and quaint villages filled with warm Dominican people. The DR features the best beaches, fascinating history and culture, and is a chosen escape for celebrities, couples and families alike. Caribbean Hotel Profits Retreated in 2009

Cost Controls Mitigate Decline Relative To U.S. Properties

ATLANTA, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ — The Caribbean lodging industry felt the full negative impact of the recent global recession in 2009, but to a lesser degree than the U.S. hotel industry.  During the year, Caribbean hotel revenues and profits experienced double-digit declines.  While the results may be disappointing for Caribbean hotel owners and operators, the fall off in net operating income was much less severe than what was experienced by U.S. properties.  These findings are reported by Colliers PKF Consulting USA (PKFC) in the recently released 2010 edition of Caribbean Trends® in the Hotel Industry, the only published research available that focuses exclusively on Caribbean hotel profits, revenues, and expenses.

”It is evident that Caribbean hotels and resorts suffered one of the worst declines in profitability during 2009,” said Scott Smith, MAI, senior vice president in the Atlanta office of Colliers PKF Consulting USA.  “Being a global destination for leisure and incentive group travelers, as well as intra-regional commercial demand, the worldwide recession resulted in significant declines in hotel performance.  It may still be hurricane season in the Caribbean, but fortunately we are starting to see the stormy economic seas begin to calm in 2010.”

 Fewer Guests, Less Revenue

In aggregate, the hotels in the Caribbean Trends® survey sample reported an 11.9 percent decline in total revenue from 2008 to 2009.  Leading the dollar decline in revenue was the 13.6 percent fall off in rooms revenue, the result of a 3.7 percent drop in occupancy and a 10.1 percent decline in ADR.

”With fewer guests staying at the Caribbean properties, all other sources of revenue posted declines as well,” Smith noted.  “Food and beverage revenue fell 13.7 percent from 2008 to 2009, while the revenue from other operated departments (golf, spa, retail, casinos) declined a relatively modest 5.3 percent.”

 Costs Controlled

Facing declines in revenue, Caribbean hotel managers responded by cutting costs an impressive 10.5 percent.  Unfortunately, this was not enough to overcome the 11.9 percent fall off in revenues.

”Due to climate, population, natural resources, and government involvement, Caribbean hotel managers have some unique operational advantages, and disadvantages, compared to their U.S. counterparts,” Smith said.  “In general, labor costs and property taxes tend to be less in the Caribbean.  However, the cost of supplies, insurance, and utilities are frequently higher than in the U.S.”

Despite relatively low wage rates, labor costs are the single biggest item of Caribbean hotels’ expenses.  Therefore, operators had to implement staffing cuts and salary/wage reductions in order to keep departmental expense ratios in line.  In total, labor related expenditures were reduced by approximately 11.0 percent from 2008 to 2009.

The largest expense reduction was achieved in the utility department.  “In past issues of Trends® we reported that many hotels in the Caribbean were implementing ‘green’ sustainable energy practices in an effort to control utility costs.  By using energy-efficient light bulbs, toilets, sinks, and showers, Caribbean hotel managers were able to cut their utility costs by 21.2 percent in 2009,” Smith observed.

The only expense item to rise in 2009 was insurance costs.  During the year, insurance premium payments increased 5.3 percent.  “Despite a relatively calm hurricane season in 2009, insurers still fear the threat of hurricanes,” he added.

 Future Profits

With Caribbean hotel revenues declining at a greater pace than expense cuts, net operating income in the Trends® sample declined 18.2 percent in 2009.  While this is a significant decline, it is considerably less than the 35.4 percent drop in profitability reported in the 2010 edition of U.S. Trends® in the Hotel Industry.

Fortunately, things are beginning to pick up in 2010.  The peak season results as reported by Smith Travel Research indicated a comeback in the demand for lodging accommodations in the region.  “As with the United States, we are clearly in the beginning stage of what should be a period of improving operating performance for the Caribbean lodging industry.  Our estimates of demand and ADR growth are strong through 2013.  However, one cannot ignore the depth of the 2009 recession and what was occurring in the real estate and financial markets.  This is going to be a protracted revival for hotel operators and an even longer recovery for property owners,” Smith concluded.

To purchase a copy of the 2010 Caribbean Trends® in the Hotel Industry report in PDF format, please visit the firm’s online store at www.pkfc.com/store, or call (866) 842-8754.  The report contains several data tables that allow Caribbean hotel owners and operators to benchmark the financial performance of their property based on room count and ADR groupings.

Two Major Caribbean Organizations Join to Develop Haiti's First Airport Hotel

Rolando Gonzalez-Bunster, WIN Group, join to develop much-needed hotel

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Sept 13 /PRNewswire/ — Argentine entrepreneur Rolando Gonzalez-Bunster, President & CEO of Basic Energy Ltd., as well as numerous other diversified entities, along with Haiti-based WIN Group, one of the country’s largest enterprises, today announced an agreement to develop a 240-room hotel with conference facilities directly adjacent to Port-Au-Prince’s Toussaint L’Ouverture International Airport.

The property, scheduled to break ground by the end of 2010, has an 18-month construction window and will be Haiti’s first airport hotel. The hotel, which is yet to be named, will be independently operated.

The fully-enclosed, $33 million project will be developed on a 5.3 acre parcel (2.14 hectares), and will be completely self-contained, with on-site power plant, water treatment, sewage, and related facilities.

Construction will be achieved through a combination of standard construction methods and pre-fabricated processes.  The site allows for future development, specifically commercial office and retail outlets.

The amenity-rich, seven-story property is being designed by OBM International, a 70+ year-old full-service design-consulting firm with vast experience in the hotel industry.  The property will feature full conference facilities with capacity to accommodate up to 400 individuals for a single event.  It will also include numerous break-out rooms, expanded food and beverage outlets, work-out center, swimming pool, spa facilities and lounges, all within lush, tropical landscaping, and will be built to meet or exceed all international earthquake standards.

”We recognize the importance of having facilities that can house individuals during the rebuilding process,” said Gonzalez-Bunster, whose holdings include energy investments in neighboring Dominican Republic.  “It is currently extremely challenging to secure accommodations since so much of the infrastructure was decimated by the earthquake.”

”This is such an important project on so many levels,” adds WIN Group Managing Partner Youri Mevs.  “Not only will it provide badly-needed hotel and conference facilities, but will employ hundreds of local workers in desperate need of generating revenue to support themselves and their families.”

”We are pleased with the opportunity to be part of such an integral project,” states Douglas A. Kulig, AIA, CEO of OBM International.  “The hotel will be elegant, with a distinct Creole feel, as well as provide an all-inclusive element for its guests from the moment they pass through the property’s entry-gate.”

”Our goal is to encourage long-term sustainable investment in Haiti,” notes President Bill Clinton, UN Special Envoy to Haiti and co-chair of the Interim Haiti Reconstruction Commission (IHRC).  “An adequate network of hotels is crucial to the country, and this venture is one example that the numerous facets needed to rebuild Port Au Prince are slowly getting under way.”

New Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association Study Cites Higher Destination Spending

CASTRIES, Saint Lucia, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Cruise spending is up in a down economy in destinations visited by cruise line-members of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association.

“”This certainly is wonderful news, but it doesn’t surprise me,”" Michele M. Paige, FCCA president, told association members attending the 16th Annual Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association’s Conference and Trade Show in St. Lucia. “”FCCA members are known for seeing opportunities — not obstacles.”"

FCCA Chairman Micky Arison agreed. “”No industry is recession-proof, but the cruise industry traditionally has been recession-resistant,”" said Arison, chairman and CEO of Carnival Corporation & plc.

The new study analyzed spending by passengers, crew members and cruise lines in destinations ranging from the Caribbean islands, Mexico, Central America and South America, said Andrew Moody, Ph.D., president of the Exton, PA-based research group. Among BREA’s findings:
