Orlando, Fl. May 3, 2007: Put on by Central Florida’s Caribbean Sun newspaper, this year’s Expo, held as part of the celebration of Caribbean American Heritage month, will bring together entrepreneurs from the United States and the Caribbean to showcase their products and services and to explore the development of business relationships. Caribbean-American Heritage Month is designated to highlight and celebrate the great contributions of Caribbean Americans to the fabric of the United States of America and this Expo seeks to demonstrate the contribution of Caribbean Americans in the field of business and economic development.
Last year’s Expo was a phenomenal success, attracting more than 80 exhibitors and resulting in the establishment of new import and export business, including contracts for the supply of rice, peppers and other products from the Caribbean and the supply from Florida of equipment and raw material. One of the main success stories emerging from last year’s Expo is an initiative involving Laparkan, Tropical Shipping and small manufacturers/producers in Guyana to allow for the regular shipment of their products by consolidating these into a single container. This allows for small producers, the quantity of whose products cannot fill a container, to consolidate their shipments thereby reducing shipping costs.
The formal opening of the Expo will take place on Friday, June 1, 2007, and will be followed by a tour of the booths by dignitaries and the more than 400 specially invited guests. A cocktail reception will close out the evening’s proceedings. Florida Governor Charlie Crist has been invited to deliver the keynote address and officially declare the Expo open. Last year, Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo was the guest of honor and keynote speaker.
The Caribbean Village will be opened on Saturday and Sunday, June 2 and 3, providing attendees with an opportunity to sample the rich and diverse Caribbean culture. Several artistes will perform over the two days and a major feature of the Village will be the display and availability of Beers of the Caribbean. Several area restaurants will offer their tasty varieties of Caribbean food.
The Expo and Caribbean Village are free to the Public.

Caribbean Immigrant Makes Super Bowl Debut

CaribPR Newswire, MIAMI, FL, Mon. Feb. 5, 2007: On a day when African-American head coach Tony Dungy made history by leading his Indianapolis Colts to a 29-17 victory over the Chicago Bears, a Caribbean immigrant was making a Super Bowl debut of his own off the field.    As the historic match-up unfolded on the field, Guyanese national Kemp Johnson was making his own unique mark in a 42 billion dollar vending industry that has few minority franchisees.   Johnson recently acquired a 24Seven franchise and with it the lucrative rights to operate the vending machines at Dolphin Stadium in Miami ahead of the Super Bowl. A graduate of the University of Rochester and Clark-Atlanta University’s MBA program, Johnson is an entrepreneur and owner of a successful Miami based real estate firm who responded to a diversity outreach initiative which 24Seven launched in October.   Attracted to the consistent cash flow and schedule flexibility, which the 24Seven’s franchising program offered, Johnson leapt at the opportunity.
24Seven ( www.24seven.com ) offers franchisees territories with pre-sited snack and soda vending machines with known sales histories.     In addition, 24seven also provides franchisees with a patented wireless technology and software system that enables them to monitor vending sales, restocking requirements, profitability, and machine operating diagnostics via the laptop.   A typical franchise includes 60-90 vending machines at 12-20 locations with an historical revenue stream of approximately $6,730 per week in gross revenues ($350,000 per annum). One goal of the 24Seven initiative is to improve minority representation within an industry plagued by high industry barriers to entry.   Gregory Moore, a transactional attorney coordinating this effort stated, “”There are several barriers to entry which have historically inhibited diversity.   First, the average vending machine costs about $4,000, so a 100-machine route requires a significant capital investment (about 400k).   Secondly and most significantly, people of color encounter a difficult time securing top locations for machines.”" Moore further explained, “”And like the restaurant and real estate business, in vending, location is key.   The great thing about 24seven’s franchising program is that lowers these traditional barriers by leasing the equipment at top locations to franchisees.   Coupled with the technology and ongoing training and support of a 200 million dollar company, folks like Kemp are taking over valuable real estate like Pro Player Stadium which they otherwise might not have been able to secure”"   24Seven Franchises are currently available in 19 states including New York, New Jersey, Florida, California, Florida, Georgia, and Washington, DC.   Sales of the Franchises have been brisk with over 100 sold in less than two years. 24Seven expects to double that number next year and there is an 18-person wait list in Los Angeles. Persons interested in following in Johnson’s footsteps or learning how they too can become the owner of a lucrative 24Seven franchise can contact Felicia Persaud at 718-476-3616 or via email at: [email protected]. – CaribPR.com   PHOTO: Kemp Johnson, r., seals the 24Seven franchise deal late last year. Caribbean-Born Couple Takes Region’s Flags To A Higher Level

CaribPR Newswire, ATLANTA, GA, Weds. Sept. 20, 2006: From an almost fruitless online search for Caribbean souvenirs, to a booming business, grossing more than $80,000 in annual revenue. That according to Trinidadian entrepreneur, Leslie Jones is the story of CaribbeanFlags.com in a nutshell. Frustration over the inability to find products from his homeland or from any other Caribbean island for that matter was the catalyst that set the wheels in motion, leading ultimately to the creation of the website which specializes in Caribbean flag products.
From its humble beginnings back in 2001 with revenue just over $12,000 for its first full year of operation, CaribbeanFlags.com is now a market leader, boasting an inventory of over 900 products.
Operating on the premise that if you love your island, you’ll show your colors, the company provides a variety of products including tote bags, key chains, decorative pillows, blankets, decorative dolls, mini boxing gloves, necklaces, backpacks and bumper stickers.
It is clear that CaribbeanFlags has found a rewarding niche market, catering to the patriotic desires of proud Caribbean nationals.
The company processes about 250 orders monthly. The more popular items are the jumbo flags, the bandanas and stick flags. Jones says they’ve also sold a large amount of wristbands and necklaces depicting the various Caribbean flags but unfortunately the demand is exceeding supply. “”Those items are a big hit but the suppliers make limited only during the spring season.”"
Products depicting the flags of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico Haiti and the U.S. Virgin Islands are among the top five most popular selling countries.
CaribbeanFlags has a customer base of 8,000 with another 4,000 potential customers included on the company’s mailing list. The majority of the customers are individuals but they have served businesses such as American Airlines, MTV, government institutions and colleges and various churches.
The United States, the United Kingdom and Canada provide the majority of customers. There are very few orders from Caribbean countries and Jones says this helps substantiate their target audience. “”We’re not targeting the Caribbean countries specifically but rather people who migrated from the Caribbean. While you may find some of our products on every other block in New York, in Indiana for example, it will be harder to source them.”"
The Internet-based company is moving to further expand its customer base and boost revenue generation through the introduction of custom design printing.   “”As much as I have customers who buy what is available now, they’re always looking for something new.”"
In response to the needs of its longstanding customers, Caribbeanflags.com is now offering custom design t-shirts and bandanas for promotional or other events. Previously restricted to selling t-shirts in medium, large and extra-large, the company is now able to provide any size up to 6XL and in a variety of colors.
The introduction of the new service comes on the heels of a newfound partnership with a company, which will create the customs designed products at a reasonable price.
CaribbeanFlags does not subject its customers to long delayed gratification but instead delivers reliable and expedient service, shipping orders with 24-48 hours. Custom printed orders from CarinbbeanFlags.com are usually shipped within 7-14 days.
In addition to the business generated through direct visits to the website, CaribbeanFlags has an affiliate network of up to 250 websites that carry its banner, advertising its products. Up to 30 percent of the company’s sales is generated through this effort and it offers a 20 percent earning to the website that generates each order.
Jones reveals that his company is continuously in search of partners with which it can do business. One of its current partners is Caribbeancookingtips.com and it offers customers a free sample cookbook with each order.
CaribbeanFlags has evolved significantly in the past five years as can be expected of any startup operation. However, one aspect that will not change is the online format. Jones vows to maintain that approach because it significantly reduces overhead costs and allows them to offer customers very “”reasonable prices.”"
Jones attributes the success of the operation to his focus and dedication in running the operation. His wife, Sharda completes the formidable two-member team. Sharda, who’s Jamaican, has a BA in Human Services. Jones has a BA in Business Administration and also worked as a computer programmer.
Established in 1991, the Georgia-based CaribbeanFlags.com is one of the oldest web-based Caribbean retail companies.
