His comments come as the latest “Climatescope,” the first annual report, index and interactive web tool which scores 26 nations on their relative ability to foster low-carbon energy growth in the region of Latin America by the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank and Bloomberg New Energy Finance, showed Brazil, Nicaragua and Panama grabbing chunks of investment in renewable but the Caribbean region way down the list with the Dominican Republic at 15.

Yeo said investment in renewables, especially solar, will not only lower the cost of energy across the region but helps create 11 times more jobs than natural gas or coal.

“Capital intensive renewable energy is an important vehicle to increase the inflow of capital into the Caribbean and achieve economic growth, said Yeo.

At the Invest Caribbean Now forum on June 6th in New York City, both institutional investors shared their experiences with over 150 delegates including over a dozen Caribbean ministers of government.

Blue, chair of Blue Equity LLC, spoke of his multi-million dollar investments in Jamaica and expressed extreme satisfaction with the country and its business environment.

Jean Arnell, vice president of the French Saint Martin Chamber of Commerce, told the audience that the Caribbean island is open for business and over the next five years is looking to create a “Free Zone” of office and warehouse, an island wide broadband open access network and expand its road, water and sewage networks and the Grand Case Airport for regional traffic.

St. Martin was represented by a delegation of five including President of the Collectivity, Alain Richardson. In addition, there were several ministers of tourism present including Chief Minister Government of Anguilla, Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Investment, Commerce & Tourism, Hubert Hughes; and the Premier of the British Virgin Islands, Dr. Daniel Orlando Smith. 

Lisa Lake, Chief Development Director, Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship – Caribbean, who wrapped up the panel, insisted that the ultimate goal of the center was to help young entrepreneurs grow and create employment for others.

That’s according to Jennifer Baldwin, Research Fellow, Energy and Environment, Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), Inter-American Development Group, and one of three panelists who will address delegates at the inaugural “Going Green” Invest Caribbean Now Forum, part of this year’s Caribbean Tourism Organization’s 13^th annual Sustainable Tourism Conference.

The CTO is partnering with Invest Caribbean Now, the brand founded by Felicia Persaud, the Guyana-born CEO of the New York-based digital media company Hard Beat Communications, to present the inaugural green forum – set for April 18, 2012 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal.

“Significant cost savings and new entrepreneurial opportunities can be created if businesses invest in quantifying and managing their environmental impacts,” said Baldwin. “The Multilateral Investment Fund has over 10 years of experience helping tourism businesses in Latin America and the Caribbean to reduce their energy and water use and to increase their stewardship of natural resources. I will share several success stories of businesses that profited from reducing their environmental impact through efficiency, renewables, and building a green brand around conservation. I will also share our newest projects on these topics in the Caribbean.” 

Currently, renewable energy provides less than two percent of the Caribbean region’s commercial electricity.

Other presenters of the April 18^th forum will include Tony Fiddy, President of the Waste to Energy Division and Regional Vice President for Europe and Africa, Naanovo Energy Inc. who will discuss Naanovo’s focus on helping the Caribbean region move away from fossil-fuels and into alternative energy.

That’s according to Tony Fiddy, President of Waste to Energy Division and the Regional Vice President for Europe and Africa, Naanovo Energy Inc. Fiddy is one of three panelists who will address delegates at the inaugural “Going Green” Invest Caribbean Now Forum, part of this year’s Caribbean Tourism Organization’s 13^th annual Sustainable Tourism Conference.

The event is set for April 18, 2012 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal and representatives from The Inter-American Development Group.

Fiddy will focus on turning waste to energy in the Caribbean, one of the new renewable energy sectors that could transform the region from its dependence on foreign oil.

“Unfortunately, what Caribbean islands do not have plenty of is available land and the natural resources that tend to go along with that.  As a result, most Caribbean islands have had little choice but to import fossil-fuels to generate power.  In fact, low grade bunker-C power plants are still common in the Caribbean,” said Fiddy. “Fortunately, for us, Naanovo is poised to play a greater role in the future toward helping the Caribbean region transform itself away from fossil-fuels and into alternative energy.  Our solar power, waste to energy and biomass energy solutions will help us do that and we look forward to being part of this transformation.  What governments in the Caribbean region need to do is open the door for companies like ours to show them how it can be done and to take the bold steps necessary to invest in these kinds of alternative energy solutions. I hope to share some insights at the Going Green Invest Caribbean Now Forum in Guyana Conference as to how to accomplish that.”

As head of the WTE Division, Fiddy’s primary responsibility is to oversee the global deployment of WTE/Maax systems and to work with regional representatives of Naanovo and its subsidiaries in the development of WTE projects. This includes projects in the Caribbean, among them St. Kitts/Nevis.

Watson serves as the team leader for the IDB’s MIF environment and clean energy team, conceptualizing, overseeing, and implementing the MIF’s climate change projects, investments, and research in clean and efficient energy, natural capital, and adaptation.  He leads several projects in the Caribbean, including a recent regional project on adaptation, projects on energy efficiency in Jamaica and Barbados, and a project on sustainable tourism and biodiversity in Guyana.

Guyana has become a key player in the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions which significantly contribute to climate change.  The Caribbean Tourism Organization has been staging its Annual Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development, otherwise known as the Sustainable Tourism Conference (STC) since 1997. The 2012 conference will be keynoted by former Guyana President Bharrat Jagdeo on April 15^th and is part of the information dissemination and regional awareness component of CTO’s Strategy for Sustainable Tourism. STC also serves as a primary arena where new and creative ideas about enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of the Caribbean tourism product are generated.
