RIM Expands Application Ecosystem for BlackBerry PlayBook

·        BlackBerry PlayBook to support BlackBerry Java and Android apps

·        Native C/C++ development support added, in addition to HTML5, Flash and AIR support

·        Support from leading game engines: Ideaworks Labs (AirPlay) and Unity Technologies (Unity 3)

·        BlackBerry PlayBook becomes a new market opportunity for all the developers who have already created over 25,000 BlackBerry Java apps and more than 200,000 Android apps

CaribPR Wire, Waterloo, ON – March 24, 2011 – Developers wanting to bring their new and existing apps to the highly anticipated BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet will soon have additional tools and options to enhance and expand their commercial opportunities. Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced plans to greatly expand the application ecosystem for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry PlayBook is scheduled to launch in the U.S. and Canada on April 19.

RIM will launch two optional “app players” that provide an application run-time environment for BlackBerry Java® apps and Android v2.3 apps. These new app players will allow users to download BlackBerry Java apps and Android apps from BlackBerry App World and run them on their BlackBerry PlayBook.

In addition, RIM will shortly release the native SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook enabling C/C++ application development on the BlackBerry® Tablet OS. For game-specific developers, RIM is also announcing that it has gained support from two leading game development tooling companies, allowing developers to use the cross-platform game engines from Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies to bring their games to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Support for BlackBerry Java and Android Apps

“The BlackBerry PlayBook is an amazing tablet. The power that we have embedded creates one of the most compelling app experiences available in a mobile computing device today,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “The upcoming addition of BlackBerry Java and Android apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook on BlackBerry App World will provide our users with an even greater choice of apps and will also showcase the versatility of the platform.”

Developers currently building for the BlackBerry or Android platforms will be able to quickly and easily port their apps to run on the BlackBerry Tablet OS thanks to a high degree of API compatibility.  The new optional app players will be available for download from BlackBerry App World and will be placed in a secure “sandbox” on the BlackBerry PlayBook where the BlackBerry Java or Android apps can be run.

Developers will simply repackage, code sign and submit their BlackBerry Java and Android apps to BlackBerry App World. Once approved, the apps will be distributed through BlackBerry App World, providing a new opportunity for many developers to reach BlackBerry PlayBook users.  Users will be able to download both the app players and the BlackBerry Java and Android apps from BlackBerry App World.

The BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry Tablet OS are built on the QNX® Neutrino® microkernel architecture with a 1GHz dual core processor and a leading OpenGL solution, which allows RIM to make this incredibly broad platform support possible.

BlackBerry PlayBook users and developers who are interested in seeing the new app players for BlackBerry Java and Android apps can see demos at BlackBerry World in Orlando, Florida (May 3 to 5, 2011) (www.blackberryworld.com).

 BlackBerry Tablet OS Development Tools

The BlackBerry Tablet OS already supports an incredibly robust platform with support for Web development standard HTML5, through the BlackBerry® WebWorks™ SDK for Tablet OS, and Adobe® AIR®, through the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR. The BlackBerry Tablet OS is built from the ground up to run WebKit and Adobe® Flash® as well, giving developers a fast and true Web experience to leverage.

RIM is also announcing today that the BlackBerry Tablet OS Native Development Kit (NDK), which is currently in limited alpha release, will go into open Beta by this summer and be demonstrated at BlackBerry World. The BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will allow developers to build high-performance, multi-threaded, native C/C++ applications with industry standard GNU toolchains. Developers can create advanced 2D and 3D applications and special effects by leveraging programmable shaders available in hardware-accelerated OpenGL ES 2.0.

Other features of the BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will allow developers to:

  • Take advantage of the QNX POSIX library support and C/C++ compliance for quick and easy application porting and for creating native extensions for both BlackBerry and Android applications
  • Easily integrate device events like gesture swipes and touch screen inputs
  • Integrate the BlackBerry Tablet OS environment into existing code management and build systems using industry standard Eclipse CDT (C/C++ Development Tools)
  • Leverage work done in standard C/C++ to make it easier to bring applications to the BlackBerry Tablet OS
  • Find and fix bugs quickly with provided debug and analysis tools

“The response to the BlackBerry PlayBook from the developer community has been exceptional. Our commitment to supporting HTML5 and Adobe AIR development has resonated and spurred developers to create fun and innovative applications for BlackBerry PlayBook users,” said David Yach, Chief Technology Officer, Software at Research In Motion. “The upcoming BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK beta will add C/C++ tools to our repertoire and gives developers one of the broadest and deepest platforms to develop on.”

Gaming Engines

Building on the power of the BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK, RIM is working with leading gaming and application development technology providers such as Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies to implement their native engines and application development platforms. Developers will be able to take advantage of these engines when building games and other applications for the BlackBerry PlayBook.

The Ideaworks Labs Airplay SDK is expected to include support for the BlackBerry Tablet OS soon, making it easy for publishers and developers to use their existing code to bring their games and apps to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

”Supporting a new OS can be a challenge for developers,” says Alex Caccia, President of Ideaworks Labs, “however, integration of the BlackBerry Tablet OS with the Airplay SDK makes this a non-issue. We think this is a far-sighted move by RIM: the BlackBerry PlayBook is a great device for games and applications, and combining this with content distribution via BlackBerry App World brings an exciting new ecosystem for developers.”

RIM has also been working closely with Unity Technologies, providers of the highly popular, multi-platform Unity development platform and Union, the firm’s games distribution service.  Through Union, dozens of high-quality Unity-authored games are slated to make their way to BlackBerry App World for the BlackBerry Playbook.

“With a sharp focus on the multimedia experience, very powerful hardware, and fantastic games in the pipeline, the BlackBerry Playbook has all the right ingredients to be a mainstream hit,” said Brett Seyler, GM of Union at Unity Technologies. “Through Union, Unity developers have an opportunity to reach a new audience and grow with another great new platform.”

 Availability

The new app players for the BlackBerry PlayBook are expected to be available from BlackBerry App World this summer. More information and demonstrations of the new app players will be shared at BlackBerry World. The BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will be available in beta later this year and will also be showcased at BlackBerry World.

CrimsonLogic Helps Automate Qatar's Customs System

New unified clearing system to streamline procedures and ensure accuracy

SINGAPORE, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ — CrimsonLogic, a leading provider of eGovernment solutions and services, was awarded a contract in 2008 by the State of Qatar to design and implement a nationwide eGovernment system to automate and streamline the customs administration system. Currently in phases of implementation, the system, upon completion, will simplify procedures to bring about hassle-free trade clearance for the local trading community and their international trading partners.

The Qatar Customs Clearance Single Window (QCCSW) project, granted by government agency ictQATAR, with support from the Customs and Ports General Authority (CPGA), will provide a single electronic interface linking the trading community with up to 13 relevant ministries and government agencies. This will facilitate data exchange for cargo clearance, encourage a seamless cross-border trade flow and reduce time spent on paperwork.

”We are excited to be part of this revolutionary system by the Qatari government. Qatar is a visionary country and is aggressively embracing automation to achieve greater transparency and increased business efficiency. The QCCSW project is a significant milestone in Qatar’s extensive automation drive as it puts in place a unified clearing system that simplifies customs procedures and ensures accuracy, as well as brings significant cost savings to government agencies and the trading community,” said Leong Peng Kiong, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), CrimsonLogic.

The new customs system employs a method of classification, by separating declarations according to the importance of inspections needed. Qatar is set to lessen customs inspection to just five percent of total imports — a target set by the country’s Maritime Customs. Importers will be able to save time and efforts as clearance procedures will now be conducted virtually. Consignment clearances will also be greatly reduced from a period of a few weeks to a few minutes, preventing overcrowding and demurrages in Qatari ports. This utilisation of international best practices will benefit economic development and promote foreign investment in the country.

On the challenges of executing multi-geographical solution implementations, Mr Leong said, “Our approach to any solution is holistic and goes beyond IT systems and implementation. Specifically, it encompasses devising comprehensive change management programmes to cultivate adoption of the system amongst potential users. Similarly, for the Qatar project, the provision of online end-to-end services aims to make it convenient for users to use the system during the customs clearance process.”

In a span of five years, CrimsonLogic has established a strong presence in the Middle East, having worked on several prominent projects, including a trade facilitation project known as SaudiEDI in Saudi Arabia in 2005, an integrated arbitration system in Dubai in 2007, and an eJustice programme in the United Arab Emirates in 2008.

As a leading eGovernment solution provider worldwide, CrimsonLogic has been working with governments across the globe to develop and implement eGovernment systems. Just last month, it announced its recent appointment by the government of Mauritius to help design and implement an eJudiciary programme. This new system aims to improve court administration, boost judicial transparency and efficiency.

Commissioned by the Judiciary of Mauritius and in partnership with local partner Mauritius Network Service, CrimsonLogic will be establishing an eJudiciary platform that delivers e-Filing and Case Management capabilities to automate internal processes for the Supreme Court in the first phase of the project.  The rollout of activities from planning, designing, marketing, delivering and supporting various eJudiciary services will take place over a period of 18 months.

The programme will enable the Judiciary to move towards a paperless system, easing the reliance on paper and eliminating the need for physical storage space and security. This integrated platform enables seamless case filing, notary services and legal research — minimising the risks of human error and time spent on administrative procedures. The legal fraternity will also benefit from its single user interface where the easy management of cases from initiation, trial and then disposal can be facilitated. In addition, CrimsonLogic will work closely with the Judiciary to drive user adoption amongst government officials and the legal community.

 About CrimsonLogic Pte Ltd

CrimsonLogic is a trusted partner to governments worldwide. For over 20 years, CrimsonLogic has worked with governments across Asia, Middle East, North America, Latin America and Africa to find innovative and sustainable solutions to collaborate more seamlessly with their citizens and ecosystem.

CrimsonLogic has continued to set industry-standards by delivering world-first eGovernment solutions to optimize workflow, increase operational efficiencies, and improve decision-making. Widespread Fraud by Calling Cards Exposed by Rebtel in First-Ever Report on U.S. Calling Habits to Trinidad and Tobago

75.3% of Survey Respondents Received Fewer Minutes Than Calling Cards Promised

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ — People in the U.S. who use international calling cards to stay in touch with family and friends in Trinidad and Tobago said they almost never get all of the calling minutes purchased, and that calling card fraud has cheated some of them by as much as $1,000.

The first-ever report on calling habits to Trinidad and Tobago from the U.S. revealed that 75.3% believe they received fewer minutes than promised by calling cards.  The average loss due to fraudulent cards was $90, the study found, but many respondents said the total sum lost was far greater.

Conducted last month by Rebtel (http://www.rebtel.com), the first-ever research uncovered fascinating findings on U.S. calling habits to Trinidad and Tobago.

Nearly two-thirds – 61.2% – of Rebtel calls to Trinidad and Tobago that originate in the U.S. go to family members; 36.5% go to friends; only 2.4% go to business associates. Calling rates are hands-down the most important aspect of international calling among survey respondents, with call quality second.

Among survey participants, 73.2% said Rebtel rates are better than alternatives for calling Trinidad and Tobago.  Almost 71% said Rebtel offers superior call quality.

For calling Trinidad and Tobago, 96.5% of survey respondents said they would recommend Rebtel to friends.

Release of the study coincides with dramatic rate reductions by Rebtel on calls to Trinidad and Tobago: a 72% cut on calls to landlines and up to 22% on calls to mobile phones.

Founded in 2006, Stockholm-based Rebtel was established to give people around the world an alternative to rip-off phone cards’ rates for making international calls.

Rebtel is the world’s largest independent mobile VoIP company. Millions of people worldwide regularly use Rebtel to make international calls to loved ones at home for just pennies per minute. Rebtel works with any phone. There’s nothing to download, upload, or install. No contracts, monthly fees or hidden costs.  No special access numbers, PIN numbers or long international phone numbers to remember and enter. Rebtel customers only pay super-cheap calling rates for the minutes they use, and free calling is always an option between 50 countries where Rebtel is available. To start using Rebtel, go to http://www.rebtel.com.
